Launchpads
for Literacy
Launchpads for Literacy is an organization that provides personal
computers to students in Pickens County, GA. who can't afford to purchase
one. These computers are donated by by individuals, businesses and
governmental groups. The local
Community Thrift Store
provides Launchpads with funding for items which cannot be obtained through donations.
A lot of work goes in to preparing the computer for use by the
student. Volunteers clean and upgrade the computers, and install
Windows™ along with useful software for schoolwork, including
OpenOffice word-processing and presentation software,
Tux Paint graphics,
FireFox Web browser,
Thunderbird e-mail client.
If you have an older computer to donate, please drop it off at the Pickens Community
Thrift store. If you run a business, and have several to donate, please call Amelia McIntyre at
the number below to arrange for free pickup. Our technicians will ensure that any
existing information stored on these computers is securely erased.
Help is needed in upgrading these donated computers.
No special skills are needed - just three or four hours one day a week -
plus a big heart.
A side benefit is that people who donate
their time learn how to maintain and upgrade their own computers while helping
someone in need.
If you want to help out, please call Amelia McIntyre at the Board
of Education at 706-253-1700.
