Air Conditioning Belt

The summer of 2010 has been a hot one! High temperature records have been falling in record numbers all over the country, putting Americans at risk for heat-related illnesses and even death. More than ever, it is essential to keep your air conditioning system in peak operating order and not let small problems become big ones. If you suspect your unit is struggling to keep up with the high demands being placed on it, here are some things to look for and what to do about them.

  • Leaky unit: One of the most common problems with air conditioners is water leakage. Whether you have a window unit or a whole-house system that uses an outdoor condenser, such a problem can quickly lead to not only system failure but also water-related damage to your home's exterior or interior structure. To prevent mold, mildew and the loss of your cooling altogether, it's wise to nip this problem in the bud as soon as possible. Check your unit's condensation pan first to make sure it is not rusted out and allowing water to seep through; if the pan is sound, then the issue might stem from a blocked drain.
  • Noisy unit: Although that near-constant wailing sound is probably not preventing your system from operating correctly, it is an annoyance that keeps you from enjoying a peaceful indoor environment! When your unit is operating more than usual, as it probably has this summer, it is common for the fan belt to become slightly dislodged: creating that "lovely" grinding sound. If this is the problem, simply put the belt back in place and/or lubricate the bearings in the motor.
  • Unit not cooling properly: Unlike the above problems, this one creates an emergency situation that must be remedied immediately. Most homeowners, even avid do-it-yourselfers, simply do not have the knowledge base to diagnose the cause of the system failure and therefore it is wisest to contact a professional HVAC technician to handle it. In most cases the grills have become blocked, but improper cooling can also be caused by a number of other factors. If you choose to diagnose the problem yourself, be sure to turn off all power to the unit before conducting an investigation.

If your system fails to cool adequately, be sure to safeguard the well-being of family members first before attempting to fix the problem or until a technician arrives: in this heat it simply doesn't take long for people to begin feeling its effects. If you simply cannot resolve the problem yourself in a timely manner, don't take chances: contact your Utah heating contractor or professional in the state where you live immediately.

Tire Stores Help with Car Air Conditioning Check-Ups

Air Conditioning is often cited as one of man's ten best inventions – instant comfort in hot weather at the touch of a button. When coupled with another of his ten best inventions, the automobile, you have one of the world's all-time winning combinations.  But, when you neglect having your vehicle's air conditioning checked on a regular basis you have a recipe for a really bad combination -- discomfort and big repair bills.  It is recommended to check your owner's manual for recommended maintenance schedule, or have your air conditioning checked at least every other year, so at the slightly sign of discomfort.

Regular check-ups by your local tire stores will include a test for leaks or faulty seals that allow refrigerant to escape from the system. Running the A/C without enough refrigerants can damage or burn out the compressor, which will cost you a lot. Refrigerant contains a light mineral oil that ingeniously lubricates the moving parts of the system while it is running. Not enough refrigerant, not enough lubrication. Some air conditioning systems, most notably on high-end vehicles, will actually sense this condition and stop the compressor from working when there is not enough refrigerant in the system. While this type of system will save you the cost of a burnt-out compressor, if you don't have your A/C system checked on a regular basis, you're not going to find this out until some hot day when you need cool air the most.

One simple thing you can do, in addition to visiting one of your local trusted tire stores, is to help minimize automotive A/C problems by running the unit periodically, even in winter. The rule of thumb is 10 minutes every month. This will distribute lubricant to the seals keeping them from becoming brittle and leaking, as well as coating interior metal parts to keep them from corroding.

Usually A/C problems manifest themselves in one of two ways:

Not Enough Cool Air which can be caused by:

-  Low refrigerant charge

-  Loose belt

-  Slipping compressor clutch

-  Clogged evaporator

-  Clogged condenser

No Cool Air which can be caused by:

- Broken drive belt

- Blown fuse

- Inoperative compressor or slipping compressor clutch

- Clogged or defective expansion valve

- Clogged receiver-drier or refrigerant line

- Leaking hoses, seals, valves or compressor

Ask A Pro

Most Automotive A/C repairs require the help of a trained professional. Not the least of which is the recharging of the refrigerant, which requires special equipment and handling. The high-pressure chemicals can be dangerous, easily injuring or blinding those not versed in the proper handling of them.

Having your A/C system checked at one of your local tire stores should not be chore in and of itself.  While having your car serviced for other items such as oil changes or tire rotations, have your ASE certified technician check the A/C system, too. Most people tend to have their tires rotated or have new tires installed at the change of the seasons anyway  -- so why not have your A/C system checked out in the same visit?

Air conditioning compressor locked up on a 97 cavalier?

i was looking at A/C bypass pullies and they only have 1 for the 2.2L, i have a 2.4L Z24, also the belt connects only the alternator, the compressor, and the crankshaft so i dont see how i could put a smaller belt on and bypass the compressor. (look at fig. 8 on this site) http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?ForwardPage=az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/19/12/40/0900823d80191240.jsp what should i do? fixing the compressor isnt an option, too expencive.
wouldent running a smaller belt cause the belt tor rub at the tentioner?

looking at the pic is will be difficult to bypass. you'll need to run the belt directly from the crank to the alt bypassing the tensioner as well. to do it you'll have to take the alternator off, or at least really loose, slip the belt on, then tighten the alt back up. the belt has to be DEAD ON with regards to length...
not going to be fun at all. i wouldnt call it a repair, more of a "rigged up" thing thats bound to cause more problems than its worth to me...
hope this isnt your only car if you plan on shortcutting something as important as an alt belt....may be smart to get a AAA membership!!!!
