Replacing rear main bearing seal....?
I have a 1976 International truck with a 549 cubic inch gas engine. I think the rear main seal is leaking oil. Does the rear main seal have to be replaced from the back of the engine by removing transmission, clutch, etc. or can the oil pan be removed and crankshaft main bearings be loosened and a seal pushed up and around the crankshaft and then the main bearings retorqued?
Would those oil stop-leak products soften the seal enough to stop the rear main leaking? The truck sits most of the year and gets used only at harvest time. Suppose all the sitting hardens the seals over time causing the leaking.
It just depends which type of seal your engine has in it. If it has a rope seal, then you will be able to do it from the bottom after removing the oil pan. It does require a special tool to do it though. If it has a round metal and rubber seal, then it has to be replaced from the rear after removing the trans, clutch, and flywheel. Bear in mind, though, that some of the metal seals still have to have the crankshaft dropped some due to a pin in the top that is to keep the seal from spinning. If you don't know what you are doing, you can really mess it up.
