10 Key Facts to Know About Thrust Bearings
Any type of bearing is designed to allow the movement of two parts; it does so by creating less friction. There are many different types of bearings. A thrust bearing is a type of rotary bearing; it allows the movement of two separate entities but is slightly different than your normal bearing in that it allows movement while carrying a heavy axial load. Here are ten top facts to know about thrust bearings:
1. Thrust Loads - Thrust bearings are designed for pure thrust loads, they can handle high axial loads but little or no radial load – meaning it can carry loads parallel to the axis but not vertical.
2. Thrust Bearing Materials – ball thrust bearings can be made from steel, chrome steel, and brass. The washers are steel, the balls in chrome steel and the ball in brass.
3. Types of Thrust Bearings – there are several different types of thrust bearings such as ball thrust bearings and roller thrust bearing. The difference is the rolling element inside the bearing from either a ball or a long rolling shape more like a cylinder.
4. Typical Uses – roller thrust bearings are usually found in engines, gear sets, and car transmissions.
5. Bearing Failure – the many common causes of thrust bearing failure are misalignment and overloading. These two causes can affect the bearing in many different ways causing the bearing to fail.
6. Bearing Life – the life of a bearing should way out live that of the machine but due to many external factors this is usually not the case.
7. High Speed – ball thrust bearings are designed to offer optimum performance in high speed applications especially if the axial load is quite light.
8. Heavy Loads – spherical thrust bearings are used when the load being moved is quite heavy but the speed isn’t that fast and doesn’t need to be.
9. Moving Parts – needle thrust bearings are usually found in engines and such like mechanical applications as they can transmit a thrust load between two rotating objects and reduce friction.
10. Maximum Life – tapered thrust bearings ensures a true rolling motion for maximum bearing life, a good rolling motion reduces the chance of failure and damage to the bearing which increases its life span.
About the Author
Does anyone no where i can get a Suzuki LT125 clutch assembly?
Well, actually, i need a thrust washer, pressure plate, and crankshaft bearings from the clutch, but finding the thrust washer is proving impossible. Does anybody know where i can get a clutch assembly from a scrapyard maybe? IDK and i'm looking forward to getting back on my quad for deer season, so any help at all that may yield results would be greatly appreciated.
Try a junk yard. Either that or the dealer.
Good - or not-so-good - vibrations
Next to a hard-riding hull, excessive noise and vibration are among the worst powerboat problems. Other than fans of go-fast speedsters, most skippers I know don't think more engine noise is good, and no one likes a boat that rattles and vibrates.
