Are you looking for ways to increase horsepower without breaking the bank? There are many options out there but I want to show you how Nitrous Kits or NOS parts stack up against other common methods that allow you to boost your horsepower.

NOS parts are thought to be an expensive, hardly practical alternative but in reality it is quite the opposite. One common modification is changing the stock heads and cams. Many stock engines have one intake valve and one exhaust valve. Buying a new head that has four valves per cylinder will improve airflow in and out of the engine and this can improve power. New Aluminum heads on a small block may offer an easy 50 extra horsepower when compared to stock iron heads, but this comes at a price. New heads alone are going to cost you at least $1,000 which could buy a top notch nitrous kit that can add 600 or more horsepower on demand!

Another common way to increase your horsepower is to "stuff" more fuel into each cylinder. Turbo chargers/super chargers pressurize the incoming air to effectively cram more air/fuel into each cylinder. But... while burning more fuel is great for more power, it is not so great for the day to day grind. If you install a Nitrous kit, with the flick of a switch you can easily add horse power anytime you want, while maintaining the ability to drive your stock engine to work without stopping to fill up your gas tank every other block.

Contrary to common belief NOS Parts are not bad for your engine if used properly. Replacing the Ford Tempo is the Ford Contour. It strictly competes with the Honda Accord, the Chrysler Cirrus, the Dodge Stratus, and other compact and mid-size sedans. This vehicle is crafted and manufactured by the Ford Motor Company in the United States and has been made available in a couple of trim levels including GL, LX, and the sporty SE. This vehicle exudes performance, refinement and an overall execution.

This vehicle has a standard dual airbags and optional features comprise of antilock brakes, and traction control. Also, this vehicle's other features are bumpers that could withstand a five mph impact, and a base engine that was a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine that could produce 125 horsepower that works well with a 5-speed manual shift or the optional electronic 4-speed automatic transmission.

This vehicle suffered from several mishaps in several of its parts. The automatic transmission had a faulty manual lever position sensor. If the parking brake cables held some ice during the winter month, this will not allow the brake to release. Its dashboard lights were somewhat faulty with the charge warning lights glowing. Since its production in 1995, it already suffered from performance faults. The list included front seatbelt anchor tabs cracking, fuel-tank filler reinforcements leaking, the metal shield on its plastic fuel-filler pipe developing stating charge during refueling that could be an ignition source, passenger airbags inflator body cracking, overheating at head lamp and wiring-harness terminals that could result in open circuit for instrument lights, parking lamps, and tail lamps, front coil springs fracturing as a result of corrosion in several extreme environments, and owner guide manuals not being sufficiently clear.

However, because of these mishaps, the Ford Contour underwent several drastic changes so as to fully facilitate a greater driving experience for its users. In 1995, the Ford Contour reduced its chrome stripes on its bumpers and its body had been colored. The front seats were now recessed in the back so as to improve rear seat leg room. A year after, the traction control and heated mirrors were no longer an option. The remote fuel door release was removed. Made available were interior trunk lights, tilt steering wheels, and power antennas. The year 1997 made the Ford Contour sport new designs in its front and rear ends. The roof line was altered and the rear deck shorted so as to further improve rear seat headroom. For the last year of its production, 2000, each trim level received different changes and restyling.

The 2000 Ford Contour held a DOHC 24-valve V6 engine with aluminum block and heads. It had a Ford EEC-IV engine control system with port fuel injection. It had a power of 170 bhp at 6250 rpm and a capability of 165 lb-ft. of torque at 4250 rpm. It sported a transmission of a 5-speed manual. It held a curb weight of 2910 lb. The Ford Contour's wheelbase was 106.5 inches and a length of 183.9 inches.

I would use the 119cc heads for a cooler burn the 113cc heads will up your comp. and burn your heads faster and the lower lift will also help. on a big block you need more volume than lift because they are not big hp makers with lift that just rises the rpms and hp range
All with 1.840" valves get the best flow at .470" lift.
All with 1.940" valves get the best flow at .495" lift.
All with 2.070" valves get the best flow at .528" lift.
All with 2.190" valves get the best flow at .558" lift.
Lifts higher than these figures will add more duration at the maximum
flow point. Excessive lifts will cause more problems than they are
worth in an engine that is not fully race prepared.

For those who don't understand what compression ratio is, it's simply the total volume of the cylinder and combustion chamber above the piston at the bottom of its travel (referred to as bottom dead center [BDC]), divided by the combustion chamber volume above the piston at top dead center (TDC). It sounds simple enough, although most people who build their engines never actually check the compression ratio to know for sure.

Several factors dictate what the maximum compression ratio of an engine should be. As a general rule of thumb, engines with aluminum cylinder heads can tolerate one full point of compression more than an engine with cast-iron heads. The maximum compression ratio is also limited by combustion chamber design. Some cylinder heads such as small-block Chevys are more tolerant of higher compression ratios than big-block Pontiacs. In general, most engines running premium fuel can tolerate a 9.5:1 compression ratio with cast-iron cylinder heads and 10.5:1 with aluminum heads. The reason for this difference is that compression ratio equates to heat, and aluminum heads reject heat better and faster than cast iron.

Ideally, you should check your compression ratio before any of the final engine machine work is done. If the engine needs to be bored oversize, this must be done so that the new pistons can be mocked up for measurement. Also, if the cylinder heads are going to be modified such as unshrouding the valves in the combustion chamber, this work needs to be done and the valves installed temporarily to measure combustion chamber volume.
