Engine oil can retain water and acids as combustion by-products. These by-products can be extremely corrosive to inactive internal surfaces as they gradually lose their protective coating through oil drainage to the sump. These effects are exacerbated in used oil, which may have exhausted its additives that help prevent these effects in daily service and we recommend that an oil and filter change prior to storage unless this has recently been done as part of regular servicing.

Regular monthly running of the engine will; re-circulate the oil to renew protection of the internal surfaces, allow belts on the engine to be run and moved to prevent them ending up with high points where sitting on the pulleys etc. Clutch, gearbox, brakes are also exercised to prevent rust bonding friction surfaces to the rust prone, cast iron usually used for flywheels and brake components.

The ignition can also be disabled and allow the engine to spin freely on the starter motor with no load until the oil ways are re-filled and pressurised, before being allowed to start completely.

The best way to run the vehicle up to temperature is not to simply start and leave idling and return to storage. This often does more harm than good. This allows damp, moisture laden air into the engine and exhaust system, eventually leading to deterioration of these components. When an exhaust rots this is usually from the inside out where this moisture is allowed to remain from short journeys without ever burning off this moisture. The best way to run the vehicle periodically is to take it for a short drive lasting for at least 10 minutes. This allows all gears to be engaged, clutch and brakes to be used. You may ne now thinking that is isn't a good idea in winter when the roads are wet, icy or even salty more often than not.

what brand of under drive pulleys is best for a 2000 chevy 5.3?

I want the best under drive pulley set to put on my 5.3 truck. (dailydriver) I don't want to hurt the charging system or cooling of the engine.

if you don't want to hurt the system, don't put an underdrive pully on it. Underdrive pullies are not recomended for daily drivers especially if you do city. Daily driving, your rpm's are usually quite low. When you underdrive your system it means that all the pumps and anything pully driven see's even less rpms than the engine. So your engine running at idol, the belt driven components are hardly running, they see like 100rpm. (which is useless). The idea of underdrive pullies was due to racing. back in the day these big engines with alternators and what not would be used for racing and your driving around a track at 6,000 RPM. well the alternators would burn up and so would the pumps, they weren't designed to run at those high rpms for a long time. not to mention they weren't as effective at those rpms. So the underdrive pully allowed them to spin the engine up while keeping the pump and alternator within their normal rpm ranges. This also gave more power so it was win win. For daily drivers, underdrive pully is not a good choice, you wont see a significant performance increase, you wont see significant mileage increase and it's hard on your system. It's just not what they are for.
