Hall effect crankshaft or camshaft position sensor. We've tested this with our 6.75" and 8.25" trigger wheels. We were able to get a rock solid reading at over 19,200 RPM, which is as fast as our test rig could spin the trigger wheel. Runs off 5 to 24 volts, and gives a nice square wave so there's no variable voltage issues. Has a 12 inch long, 3 wire pigtail. Here's what the wires do: Red - Supply voltage; connect to either VREF or 12 volt switched power. White - Output signal. On a MegaSquirt, connects to pin 24. We just set our MegaSquirt up for the VR conditioner and it works great. V3.0 MicroSquirts can also do this, but older MicroSquirts will need to use the Hall effect input. Black - Ground. Hello and welcome back to our mini-series on automotive tips and how to guides for the average Joe. This is a great series of articles if you are new to auto mechanics or maybe you just want to understand a little more about what all goes on under the hood of your car. We've spent a lot of time on tools, but in today's article I'm going to go over your car's distributorless ignition system.
The distributorless ignition system is actually a very good advancement in automotive ignition systems with only one drawback that I know of, and that's not easily being able to set your own timing. However, the the ignition system is completely computer controlled and has fewer moving parts that are suggest to the conditions and stresses of a regular distributor based ignition system. It does use a coil or set of coils, along with a crankshaft position sensor, and a camshaft position sensor to know when to for each coil. These durable parts replace the less durable distributor cap, rotor, control module and of course, the distributor itself. The crankshaft position sensor tells the computer when a coil needs to be fired while the camshaft position sensor tells the computer what coil needs to be fired. Because the computer can control and monitor what and where each individual piston is and what stroke it's on in the cycle.
Unlike distributor based systems, with the proper computer programming equipment you have nearly unlimited control over the spark curve and base advancement or retard rates and you can continually vary them throughout the power band to fine tune your vehicle. That's a major advantage for everyone looking for either more power, better fuel economy or lower emissions. In addition, because the distributorless ignition system often uses more than one coil, each cylinder has a much greater likelihood of seeing a full capacity electrical arc as opposed to depending on a single coil to run all of the cylinders. Needless to say, this type of ignition setup is the best for nearly every purpose you might need or imagine.

Acura Integra Doesn't Start
Acura wont start?
These are some of the most common no start problems with Acura Integra Vehicles from Most common #1 to least common #6.
Most common:
- Distributor igniter and Coil Built in (Most common)
- Ignition coil
- Igniter
- Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP sensor)
- Distributor Wiring Harness
- Ignition Switch
No Start issues usually boil down to 3 seperate areas
- Spark, which is Ignition system related could be a component, wiring, etc
- Fuel which has to do with gas delivery to the engine: Electrical, mechanical, simply running the vehicle out of fuel
- Engine Compression which is the pressure the engine needs to develop internally in order for the fuel to burn. Faulty timing chain, broken timing belt
- A plugged/restricted exhaust can also cause a vehicle not to start
The first step for diagnosis:
- Make sure the battery is fully charged.
- Make sure you have spark to the spark plug.
- Make sure there is fuel getting to the engine
- Make sure you have good engine compression
The battery test if pretty obvious if you turn the key and hear nothing chances are good the battery is dead. Make sure you have a sufficiently charged battery, to test this try jump starting with a known good battery, if battery is okay with a known good battery, charge the battery, and test the charging system.
Make sure you have spark at the spark plug. The easy way to test this is to remove the plug wire from the spark plug end and place a screwdriver inside, hold the screwdriver about a quarter inch away from ground and have someone crank the engine over, if you see a strong blue spark jump to ground, you have spark, more than likely ignition is good. Be careful some ignition systems produce alot of voltage.. Make sure no fuel leaks. Be safe.
The easy way to test if this is a fuel problem is to is too add fuel to the engine. Use a no starting fluid, that is best and can be purchased at any parts store. Spray it into the air intake if vehicle starts you have a fuel delivery problem.
Lastly, check that there is engine compression. This is done by removing the spark plugs, inserting a engine compression into the spark plug hole, cranking the engine and recording the reading, should be approximately 120 psi on the guage, dont just check one check all cylinders.

My new crankshaft position sensor is different?
The new crankshaft position sensoe that I got at Autozone is slightly different than the old one. It does not have the exposed metal parts at the end of the sensor. It is shuch a pain to remove/install I would hate to have to do it again. Can anyone tell me if this is just a change that was made to the part? or should I not be concerned?
OOps It's a 1998 ram 1500 5.9
Well aftermarket parts can and do sometimes look so what different , also even some new factory part replacements can look etc a bit different it all depends on who , where and what materials were used , plus it depend on if any engineer updates or changes in the design have occurred too.

1999 Kia Sportage from North America - Comments
Just bought a '99 4 a $100 with 108,000 miles on it runs perfect. Best $100 I ever spent. I have a 1999 Kia Sportage 2d soft top. No brake problems, there is a known problem with the throttle position control. Kia gave me a free plug to wire in.
