Wood turning projects give ideas for what to make and contain information as to how. In order to say if a project is successful, one must first ask why it is being made in the first place. If the object of the exercise it to make a maple what not and a maple what not results then all is good. On the other hand, many projects are done to learn a new skill so as to be able to progress to other, more complex pieces. In this case, there are other considerations for success.
First of all, examine the desired complex piece to ultimately be turned. For the sake of example let us consider a common table lamp. While it could be made from several pieces and glued up to full size, for argument's sake let us consider that it will be created from one block of wood. We would like it to have a base about six inches in diameter and a curved column ending in a slightly crowned surface for the electrical fittings and the harp to be attached.
Now we know that the skills that are to be developed are those of
- roughing a block of wood to round
- turning down from a large cylinder to a smaller one
- smoothing a curve over a known distance
- turning a crowned surface at the end of a piece
- parting the piece from the lathe
Second we need to determine a project that incorporates the needed skills. I like a couple of criteria here.
- the practice piece should be inexpensive to turn
- it should be much easier than the final piece else why bother with the intermediate step?
- all the necessary skills should be involved
For our example I might pick a simple shop mallet.
- it can be made from local hardwood firewood so cost is minimal or free
- the larger head is turned to a smaller handle
- the curve of the head and handle must both be smoothed
- the head should be crowned to sit properly on the bench top
- it needs to be parted from the lathe
Finally, the practice piece should be practiced. That is, being smaller and simpler it can be repeated as many times as necessary to develop the required skills. Then the larger and more complex piece can be reduced to what are now basic skills for the practitioner of wood turning projects.
Darrell Feltmate is a juried wood turner whose web site, Around the Woods, contains detailed information about wood turning for the novice or experienced turner as well as a collection of turnings for your viewing pleasure. You too can learn to turn wood, here is the place to start. Wondering what it looks like? Follow the page links for a free video.
There are several wood turning projects fully explained on the web site. In particular, a selection of beginner's projects may be found on the Beginner's Projects page complete with explanation and step by step photos.
Mercury Makes Some Changes to the 2010 Mountaineer
The Mercury Mountaineer, Mercury's version of the midsize Ford Explorer SUV, returns for 2010 with no engine changes.
Base and Premier models come standard with a 4.0-liter SOHC V6. This 12-valve engine is the latest iteration of Ford's long-lived Cologne V6, developed in the mid-sixties by Ford of Germany. Originally an all-iron pushrod engine, it was updated in 1997 with aluminum heads and overhead camshafts. A jackshaft in the block, located where the camshaft used to reside, drives each cam via a timing chain. This engine is shared with the Ford Explorer, as well as the Ford Ranger, Mazda B-Series, Land Rover LR3, and Ford Mustang. In the Mountaineer, it produces 210 horsepower and 254 lb-ft of torque.
Optional on Premier models is Ford's 4.6-liter modular V8. This SOHC engine, shared by the Explorer, Expedition, Mustang, and F-150 pickup, is also a very old design, dating back to 1991. Truck versions of this engine were updated in 2006 with three valves per cylinder and Ford's Variable Cam Timing system, but they still use a cast-iron block. In the Mountaineer, the 24-valve V8 makes 292 horsepower and 315 lb-ft of torque.
Critics find both engines more than adequate for the Mountaineer's weight, although even the V8 fails to match the muscle of newer rivals like the Nissan Armada. In daily commuting, the V8 does not feel dramatically stronger than the V6, although its extra torque gives it the edge for towing, and it is noticeably more refined. Both engines are well muffled, except at full throttle.
With nearly two and a half tons to haul, neither engine is thrifty. Surprisingly, EPA estimates suggest that the V8 is the more economical of the two, thanks mostly to its six-speed automatic; the V6's automatic has only five speeds. Both engines use regular fuel.

Do I have a Warped Head on a `92 ford ranger?
I have a `92 ford ranger that has had frequent cooling system problems. I have had to replace 4 of the 6 frost plugs, and after the most recent replacement, it has not ran the same. It has difficulty starting and idling. I have noticed water in the oil, as well as white smoke coming out of the tailpipe, and a general lack of performance. Is it a cracked head, warped head, blown head gasket, or have I cracked a cylinder. Also how can I tell if the head is machinable, or if it is damaged upon all repair. If it is damaged, what is the cost of replacing a head?
You pretty much covered all the possibilities so now its time for dis-assembly / inspection and replacement of defective components. Can't do that on the internet sorry. You'll have to do the research on cost from the people that rebuild heads or your local salvage yard. Usually heads are done on an exchange basis so you might possibly not be reinstalling the one you have anyway. If your old one is not repairable a core charge will be charged. Good luck.
