Obtaining the optimum cylinder head-to-block sealing is especially critical in small displacement engines employing high compression pistons or power adders like turbochargers, nitrous oxide and superchargers. That's why ARP head studs are popular among leading Sport Compact/Import racers.You should know that ARP uses a premium grade 8740 alloy that is rated far superior to "aircraft" quality. Then, each stud is precisely heat-treated to 200,000 psi. Following heattreat, each stud is centerless ground to make it as close to perfectly concentric as possible. This procedure involves about ten very slight cuts and results in an exceptionally straight part. It's important to note that lesser quality studs are not even centerless ground the material is thread rolled in bar stock form (mostly before heat-treat, when the material is easier to machine). Because ARP studs are manufactured to such exacting tolerances, you will note that gaskets and cylinder heads literally glide into position and are perfectly aligned something that won't happen with inferior quality head studs.ARP studs are thread rolled after heat-treat, which gives them about 1000% (that's ten times) better fatigue strength than those studs that are threaded prior to heat-treat.You will also note that ARP offers specially undercut studs for several engines. This procedure (done only to the shorter studs) more equalizes the "stretch" of both studs, which makes for a more consistent clamping force one that compensates for head gasket compression when the head is installed. Cylinder Head Stud

Small block Chevy casting numbers are engine series numbers cast into the engine block, cylinder heads, intake and exhaust manifolds. They are used to identify the series of engine castings designed for a specific model of car. You can use Chevy small block casting numbers to ensure the accuracy of parts on your classic car restoration, or if you are car hunting, to ensure you are getting what you are paying for.

You would use an engine casting number decoder book in a few scenarios. Picture this...

  • You are looking at a 66 Chevelle that someone has for sale and want to know if it has the correct engine.
  • Or... you are at a swap meet and a guy has a few engine parts he's selling. There is a set of camel hump heads he says are off a 327 that "came out of a Corvette."
  • You are spending the day at a "U-Pick" junk yard. You are looking for an engine core for your classic car restoration project and you run across a 65 Impala SS with an engine in it.

To know for sure you would need to lookup the casting numbers.

The Chevy small block engine casting number can be found on the bell housing section of the block just behind the passenger side cylinder head. This number will indicate some notable design specs such as, 2 or 4 bolt main bearing caps, what models of cars it was installed in, the years it was installed in those cars, and in some cases the horse power rating. Some casting numbers were used for several different models so when in doubt you will need to lookup the suffix code stamped into the engine.

The Chevy small block casting date would help you narrow down which decade the block was cast if use of the casting number spanned decades, such as the late 60's through the early 70's.

The suffix codes were numbers stamped into the engine block at assembly time. They can tell you which car the engine was originally installed in, the year, and even the option series for the car.

In general when shopping for casting number decoders you will find casting numbers and suffix codes in separate books. Casting number information for intake and exhaust manifolds, or cylinder heads is generally included in the engine block casting number decoder books. Be sure to look for the years of coverage when selecting a decoder. Some casting number decoders only cover the classic years from the 50's through the 80's and may not provide information on late model engines.

Some of the most useful decoders come in smaller sizes that will fit in a coat pocket or tool box, which comes in handy for junk yard scavenger hunts or swap meets. Others come in larger standard book sizes and will generally include more pictures and diagrams than the smaller text only sizes.

In either case, small or large, you will find them indispensable and well worth the price. Most casting number guides range in price from $15-30 US.

The History Of Rubber Bands

The ancient Mayan people used latex in order to make hollow human figures, rubber balls, and as bindings used to secure the axe heads to their handles as well as for other functions. Latex is the result of various plants, the most important one being the rubber tree which when it is exposed to the air, it hardens into a springy mass. The Mayans learned to mix together the rubber sap with the juice coming from morning glory vines so that it became more elastic and durable.

Later on, in 1736, a few rolled sheets of rubber were sent to France and in 1791; Samuel Peal invented a new way of waterproofing cloth by mixing turpentine with rubber. Another British inventor by the name of Joseph Priestly discovered that the rubber could be used to erase pencil marks. Thomas Hancock is the person who invented the British rubber industry. He designed the masticator – a machine capable of shredding rubber scraps thus allowing the rubber to be recycled after being formed into blocks or rolled into sheets. In the 19th century, to be more specific in the 1820s, he patented elastic fastenings for shoes, suspenders, stockings and gloves.

In order to help preserve the rubber, Hancock invented the masticator. The first one was a wooden machine that used a hollow cylinder studded with teeth. In 1823, Charles Macintosh patented his method of making waterproof garments using rubber dissolved in coal-tar naphtha for cementing two pieces of cloth together. A few years later in 1837 he patented the masticator which was used on a large scale since then. The wooden masticator turned into a steam-driven metal machine which was used to supply Macintosh's factory with masticated rubber.

On March 17, 1845, a man by the name of Stephen Perry belonging to the rubber manufacturing company Messers Perry and Co., Rubber Manuf London patented the first rubber bands made of vulcanized rubber. He invented them in order to hold papers and envelopes together. 31 years later, Sir Henry Wickham collected about 70,000 rubber tree seeds from the Para rubber tree. Commercial rubber production now takes place in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka (but not significantly in South America). One year later, in 1877, Chapman Mitchell discovered that the rubber can be recycled into new products.

In the present, approximately ¾ of the rubber in production is made out of crude oil. There are 20 grades of synthetic rubber and intended end use determines the selection. Generally speaking, in order to make synthetic rubber, byproducts of petroleum refining called styrene and butadiene are mixed in a reactor containing soapsuds. From this, a milky looking liquid results and the latex is coagulated from the liquid, resulting in rubber "crumbs" which are purchased by numerous manufacturers and later on, melted in a variety of products.

In the world today, there is only one kind of natural rubber. Due to the reason that the rubber plants are located in hot, damp regions near the Equator, 90% of the rubber production takes place in the Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. Because the production in Indonesia has dropped in the last few years, several plantations were built in Africa in order to fill in the gap.
