If you want to change the look and feel of your home, window treatments and paint are two of the least costly and simplest ways to do it.  While Roman Shades can be a little bit on the pricey side if you buy them at a store, they can also be easy enough for an amateur sewer to make. Making homemade Roman Shades is not the most simple project, in fact it is moderately difficult.  It may take the beginner some extra time to get the steps down.  If this is the first time you will be making Roman Shades, it might be a good idea to start this project with inexpensive fabric.  If you master this set of Roman Shades, then you can move on to making shades with more costly materials.

Things you will need:  Your choice of fabric, the same amount of lining fabric, a tape measure, a pair of scissors, a sewing machine, small curtain rings, cord to be used to raise or lower the Roman Shades, eye hooks, a staple gun, lightweight board for mounting, a dowel that is the same width as your fabric.

1. Measure your windows.  The success of this project will hinge completely on how accurate your measurements are. Start by measuring the whole perimeter of the window. The perimeter is the total of all sides of your window added together. Add to your numbers 4 inches on the width and 9 inches lengthwise. Have someone help you with the measurements so that you can be sure they are correct. Cut the fabric for the shades and the fabric for the lining to match your measurements.

2. Place each fabric right side out and lay it on your table. Pin the fabrics to get them ready for hemming, folding in 1 inch on each side widthwise and 3 inches on the bottom lengthwise.  Place a hot iron on fabric (test first) and iron a crisp line along each hem.

3. Using a simple stitch, sew the top and bottom of the shade.  Make a pocket for the curtain rod by sewing another line ¾ of an inch below the first stitching.  Judge the placement of your curtain rings by measuring 6 inch intervals across the width of the Roman Shades.

4. Sew the rings on using a zigzag stitch. Add the shade cord by threading it through the rings, knotting the cord at the bottom.

5. Using the same measurements you used to place your curtain rings, mark your mounting board to match. Screw in the eye hooks by hand

6. Use your staple gun to adhere the Roman shades to the board.

7. Thread the shade cord into the hooks

8. Put the dowel rod into the pocket that you sewed

9. Put the shade on your window

10. Stand back and enjoy your handiwork! It is amazing what a little time and patience can do.  Now you are ready to do the rest of the windows.

Repairing an Engine Block

The worst thing that can possibly happen to a car fan is a broken or cracked engine block. Although an owner of a brand new or second-hand car only few of years old can usually find repair parts for an engine block, the owners of typical cars and other motor vehicles are unable to find a replacement and have to repair the engine block themselves.

In case you are a learner without having background knowledge on cars, then try to find a mechanic in your area or an expert for repairing engine block. However, it should be noted that this is costly and time consuming task.

A note about Welding
Many people believe that engine block repair is best done by welding. This is not necessarily true. The fact is that welding an engine block can cause a failure in it in a very less time period and even do more damage than it was earlier. The appropriate time when welding is a choice is when the engine block contains holes and not cracks. For getting best results, many experts prefer to metal lock or metal stitch the cracked engine blocks.

Metal Stitching
Metal stitching is sometimes also known as metal locking. They are usually the same process but they are also known by different names depending on the area where you live. The process of metal stitching requires fixing a crack in an engine block without any welding involved. As stated above, welding is not used to repair most of the engine block repairs because of its difficulty and the time it takes for welding cast iron. Extremely high temperature is required by cast iron to weld properly. In addition, a time demanding and specific technique is used for welding engine blocks of cast iron.

The metal stitching technique is simpler and effective. The fact is that it only takes a few minutes to literally metal stitch a cracked head. For metal stitching using stitching pins, many stitching pins used in the process are made of zinc and copper plating, dowels, tapered plugs, threaded rods, etc. It is observed that anything that can be hammered into position can work. In case a cracked engine block is desired to be metal stitched, the best option is to buy a metal stitching kit. All the materials needed for doing a quality metal stitch and repairing an engine block are included in these kits.

To repair a cracked engine block with a stitch, a stitch has to be placed in the crack using a hammer, drill bit or torque wrench. Some kits contain shoulders that allow a stitch to be driven deeply in the crack so that the threads are not exposed on the surface. This will give a good looking finish.

In addition, to insert a stitch, the metal stitching kit can possibly require the user to use some kind of epoxy or sealant. All the metal stitching kits don't necessarily require this additional feature.

12 valve cummins dowel pin issue? Dodgeman I need your advice?

My friend's 98 Cummins has over 200,000 miles on it, and he just moved onto a very rough dirt road. We never thought about it, but I read an article in my diesel magazine about the dowel pin causing the destruction of many a Cummins. Now he's freakin out because his truck fits the bill and his road is almost always wash-boardy and rutted out. We've inspected the crank housing and there's no cracks and there's nothing in the oil pan, so we're assuming the little bugger's still in there. He got to looking into the problem and now he's paranoid that each bump is gonna knock the thing loose. I know what can happen if the thing hits the crank gear at 2000 rpm, and he especially doesn't want to see his beloved Cummins sent to the scrap heap. He's considering buying the repair kit, and I was wondering how much work this is gonna be, I know the whole front of the truck and the engine have to come off, would it just be easier to take it in? Thanks for the help!

its not a big deal to put in it and the kit only cost around 118.00 bucks, there's a good chance his may never have any problems, but i replaced mine on my truck just in case,if you take it in to have it done its going to run well over 600 for a shop to do it,so if you guys think you can install id do it and save the 600 bucks, its more time consuming than anything else, its not labor intensive because everything is easy to get to,and the kit comes with a good clear set of instructions to do it with,it took me about 2 days of taking my time with mine to install it,every time id get started with a good pace on it someone would come in the shop and want to talk for an hour so this made the job go a lot slower, get you a Haynes repair manual because it has the torque specs in it that you,ll need,it is better to go ahead and replace it than wait for it to come out, good luck on it.
