Orion Atlas 8 EQ Reflector Telescope List Price: $1,099.00 |
|
The Orion Atlas 8 is one of the sturdiest equatorially mounted 8-inch Newtonian reflectors sold today. This is a serious telescope, intended for avid stargazers. Once polar aligned, the telescope is designed to track the stars effortlessly across the sky, so the observer can concentrate on viewing targets without having to nudge the tube constantly just to keep up with the sky. Tracking is done by a pair of DC-powered, dual-axis tracking motors. A hand controller comes that lets the observer fine tune tracking speed, if needed. If you're only going to be using the telescope for visual observations, a rough alignment with the celestial pole is all that's needed. But if you're planning on guided photography, then the telescope must be accurately polar aligned using the mount's illuminated polar-alignment scope. Turn on the illuminated reticle and look through the polar scope's eyepiece to see a slide showing the Big Dipper, Little Dipper, and Cassiopeia. Rotate the telescope about the polar axis until the star patterns match their orientation in the sky, align Polaris over its position on the reticle, and the North Celestial Pole should be aligned with the small cross at the center. While I found the polar-alignment scope very handy, adjusting its illumination level is a little finicky. The brightness knob, which measures only about 1/8-inch in diameter and barely sticks out of the west side of the polar housing, was difficult to adjust with my fingers and impossible to grab with gloves. Power for the polar reticle as well as the dual-axis drive motors comes from either a 12-volt DC source or from a 110volt AC source with the optional converter. While owners can choose to run their telescope off a rechargeable cell or car battery if they wish, the telescope I tested ran for hours on end using eight D-cell batteries. The Atlas 8's mirrors are very good, with my tests revealing only an inconsequential trace of spherical aberration. As a result, images were sharp and clear. For instance, the Orion Nebula M42 is wonderful to view through the Atlas 8 with the included 25-mm Plössl eyepiece. Switching to the supplied 10-mm Plössl, the Trapezium quadruple star was easily resolving into four sharp points of bluish-white light. I only wish the Atlas 8 came with a larger finderscope, which would make starhopping much easier. Images through the standard 6x30 finder are quite dim. Even when I cranked up magnification to 356x using my own eyepieces, the Atlas 8 gave good views of Saturn's subtle equatorial banding, Cassini's Division, and the C ring, as well as details in Jupiter's swirling, multi-colored atmosphere. Further, when it was turned toward some seasonal double stars, the Atlas 8 easily resolved Castor, Rigel, as well as several other pairings as close as 1.5 arc-seconds apart. After that, local seeing conditions prevented me from splitting closer pairs. Throughout, the beefy Atlas mount proved to be a solid performer. Motions are smooth in both right ascension and declination, even in cold temperatures. The dual-axis drive also tracked the sky very accurately with no jumping or vibrations from the stepper motors. The Atlas 8's focuser accepts both 1.25- and 2-inch eyepieces, the former using the included adapter. Focusing is relatively smooth, although like other telescopes imported from the Far East, the sticky grease used as a lubricant does more to hinder motion than help. I was able to improve the focusing by cleaning off the grease with an aerosol degreaser and then spraying the gear rack with a dry silicone spray. If you're looking for a lightweight instrument, the Atlas 8 probably isn't for you. No denying it, the 96-pound Atlas mount takes some effort to carry (though it can be disassembled and taken out in several smaller pieces). Also, if you want a computer-controlled GoTo telescope, pass on the Atlas 8. The mount is motorized, but requires the user to find sky objects. But if you are looking for a sturdy telescope, one that won't be jostled by a nighttime wind or an accidental kick, then the Orion Atlas 8 just might be for you. --Phil Harrington, author of Star Ware and Star Watch Pros: Excellent optics Sturdy mount Smooth tracking motions Illuminated polar-alignment scope Cons: Heavy weight Small finderscope Finicky brightness adjustment on polar-alignment scope No GoTo control Even if you had zero interest in taking pictures of NGC galaxies and Messier nebulas, the Atlas 8 would exceed your expectations for visual study. It's a synthesis of 8" f/5 diffraction-limited parabolic optics and the mightiest mount to come along in years. But if astrophotography does intrigue you, then there couldn't be a sweeter setup. Just add our optional 80mm Guide Scope package and you'll be set to capture magnificent images. And you won't have to spend a fortune to do it, either. The optical tube is equipped with a 2" collimatable focuser with focus lock and comes with a camera adapter; all you need is a camera and T-ring. The Atlas mount has a built-in polar-alignment scope and dual electronic drives. Slewing at 4x and 16x and fine guiding at 2x sidereal rate are executed with the included hand controller, which also has R.A. and Dec. reverse switches. |

Here are some more information for Housing One Piece:

Bathroom sinks or basins come in many forms these days, and have a variety of installation applications. In addition to all of those options, the materials from which bathroom sinks or basins are made are also very diverse.
Types of bathroom sinks or basins
1. Freestanding sinks-Freestanding sinks can either be mounted on the wall or they can be mounted in a base that is not attached to the wall.
Wall mounted sinks come in choices as well. There are single sinks, double sinks, and those that can be mounted in a corner to save space.
The base mounted versions can be fancy or utilitarian, vintage looking or contemporary and everything in between. Some come with flat tops, some have backsplashes that although they are not mounted to the wall, they meet the wall.
There are also base mounted sinks where the sink drops into a frame on legs. Some of these are found in wrought iron, some stainless steel and other materials as well.
All of the above are attractive and unique, the drawback is that they offer little storage, and in some cases no surface space for grooming supplies.
2. Vanity mounted bathroom sinks-Vanity mounted sinks came into being when the overall size of housing shrank, and bathrooms in particular became smaller.
Vanity mounted sinks can be self rimming. This is a sink where the rim is on top of the counter.
The rimmed sink sits flat with the countertop and has a metal rim that seals it to the countertop.
The under-mounted sink is installed from below and requires the countertop to withstand water.
3. Integrated bathroom sinks-feature a one piece unit. The sink is a part of the countertop and molded in. This application often has indentations for holding a soap bar and usually also a built in backsplash.
The advantage to the one piece integrated bathroom sink is there are no seams to gather dirt and grime, making them easy to keep clean.
Which application of bathroom sink you choose depends on the bathroom, and on personal choice.

Building Your Own House: Planning The Bedrooms
If you are plainning to build your own house how large should a bedroom be?
At least large enough so that the bed can be moved around or turned around in it. Large enough for a full-sized bed and a chest of drawers, a night stand, a chair, and perhaps a dressing table. Perhaps 8' x 10' inside measurement might be considered as the absolute minimum.
Most building codes do not permit rooms smaller than 80 square feet in area, and this would just meet that requirement. Certainly a room 9' x 12' would be much better, while 11' x 14' or 12' x 14' would seem rather spacious. In an ordinary house a room 12' x 16' would be adequate for almost any master bedroom.
A bedroom isn't greatly in need of a view as a person usually isn't often in a bedroom during the daylight hours and then he usually isn't looking out the window.
People are in the living room usually in the evening when the landscape is dark, unless the view is over towns or villages where the lights make an interesting pattern.
The kitchen should, if possible, open on the sunrise.
When one is working at the sink, an occasional glance out the window overlooking an inspiring view can be very refreshing. The breakfast nook should also have a good view if at all possible.
There should be at least half as many bedrooms as there are people in the family, and a guest room is an important adjunct, if it can be managed. Two boys can occupy the same room when they are small, but, of course, the ideal is for each child to have his own room when he gets older, if at all possible.
Perhaps the master bedroom should be large enough so that two beds can be put in it in hot weather. When it is cold, probably only one of them will be used.
Where there are small children, the mother will probably want their room to be near hers, but for adults, if bedrooms can be separated from each other, one noisy or restless person will not bother the others quite so much.
A private bath for the master bedroom is a good idea, but not an absolute necessity. A good rule to follow is to have at least one bath for each two bedrooms.
A three-bedroom house should have two baths. In the morning rush hour, when the children are hurrying to get ready for school, and Dad has to shave, and mother has to do her hair, enough bathrooms will save a lot of frayed nerves. Better economize somewhere else and have enough bathrooms.
A guest room can be kept to the minimum. A private bath with the guest room will be greatly appreciated by the guests, but if this strains the budget too much, some compromise will have to be worked out. A smaller room with the private bath would be much better than a large room without it.
Try to keep the guest room somewhat isolated from the rest of the house, so the guests can be off to themselves at times. This will give them more opportunity to rest and will permit the regular activities of living to go on with less interruption.
Storage
Organized storage space is very important in designing a house. When you move in, where are you going to put the suit cases? Well! Where are you going to put them? Of course there is no place to put a trunk. A closet or wardrobe for a bedroom must have a rod to put the clothes hangers on.
A piece of V^" pipe or a piece of electric conduit is much better than a round wooden pole, as the hangers slide more easily on the pipe, and a piece of wood gets black looking if not painted, and if painted, the paint gets scraped and scarred very soon.
Shelves at one end of a wardrobe are very convenient in order, each pair easy to get without disturbing the others.
Where at all possible, it is a good idea to have separate wardrobes, particularly in the master bedroom. (A man likes to have a small place in the house that he can call his own.) A man will not usually need as much room as his wife or daughter does for clothes, but it helps to keep the arguments down if he has some space of his own. Even if he may not have many pairs of shoes, a rack for them should also be planned.
With building costs the way they are, every square foot of floor space must be used to the best possible advantage. Of course, a place for laundry, heating plant, and storage of larger items must also be found.

What steps does one need to go through to buy a trailor and put it on an already owned piece of land?
I am interested in purchasing an old dilapidated house and the land it's on, tearing it down, and putting a brand new trailer on it. I am not sure what steps one should take to accomplish this goal after buying the land.
are you talking about a travel trailer or a manufactured home?. go to the
county planning commission and give them your address and plot no's
if you have them. they will tell you what you can build on your land. they
might also have a list of contractors in the county they would recommend.
after you pick a contractor to do the site prep. you will need to call the utility co's, and have them come out to the prop and you will draw up
where you want your house and they will tell you where the phone and
electric lines will need to go. you might have to adjust the position of
your home a little to accommodate this. you will probably have a choice
weather to go overhead or underground. its more expensive to go
under but it looks better not having wires running all over. if you have utilities in the street the closer you put the house to the street the cheaper it is to get things connected. your contractor should be
familiar with your county and should be able to take care of the permits
and site prep. the people you buy the home from will bring it out and set it up when the site is ready. when the house is set the contractor will put in the conduit if you are going underground. if your going overhead the power co and phone co. will run the wires from the nearest pole to your meter. they will run the wires through the conduit
your contractor put in from the pole to your meter if you do underground
. any wiring past the meter your contractor will have to do.
if there is no sewer in the street the county will tell you what kind of septic system you need and how big the tank has to be. before you buy the land you need to make sure to have perc tests done to
make sure the ground is right to put a septic in if they aren't done
already. i did what you are going to do, i bought vacant land and put up a manufactured home and went through the whole process. i don't know if i got things in the exact order but this is kind of an overview
of what you will need to do. if you go and ask all the questions you can think of at the planning office and get a decent contractor it should
be a good experience. the county where your putting the home
will charge a fee also to bring the mobile into the county if you get it somewhere else. it cost me 3500 to bring the home into my county
from the manufacturer. this was in oregon.
