Recently President Obama has set out a new energy saving plan for America; Nuclear Energy. This has not surprised energy experts who foresee a global energy crisis, and the need to use 'alternative' energy rather than rapidly depleting stocks of fossil fuels. But is nuclear energy really the way forward?

No subject divides people the most than nuclear energy. Supporters claim it is a cheap and safe alternative to using fossil fuels, and has a proven safety record. Detractors cite Chernobyl, and prefer using cleaner energies, such as solar, water, and wind energy. Both sides can claim these energies combat global warming.

Nuclear power does not depend on fossil fuels, and so helps the environment, although the energy itself is not natural, whilst solar, water and wind energy are "new" concepts which only generate a small percentage of the energy we currently use.

However, even though the United States probably will develop a new generation of "safe" nuclear power stations, instead of the promised investment in a "green-tech" revolution. Most detractors have stated that if an accident does occur, the damage will offset any previous rewards made by using this provocative energy.

There are also other questions about nuclear energy. Currently Iran and North Korea are developing a nuclear capability, which has upset the "International Community." Yet if these developments are solely to create a cheap energy source, then other nations may follow. After all, no one preserves the monopoly on using oil, so why should they on developing nuclear power stations?

Futurists do predict we all face a global energy crisis, if we continue to live unsustainable lifestyles, and live a 'modern" lifestyle. As all current arguments are based on what energies we need to invest in to provide our future energy needs, when this crisis arrives.

Nuclear Energy is seen as dangerous and a risk to many people. If a power plant does blow like Chernobyl - it does not only affect the immediate area, but poisons the air, ground and the water supply and slowly kills off communities who have been exposed to this poison, and these communities could be spread out for hundreds of kilometers.

'Alternative' energies do not pose such a risk, but need investment and perhaps time to develop. They are still seen as being 'expensive,' and despite the fact that energies such as solar does provide 'free' electricity after the initial cost- It is something many people are still reluctant to invest in. However using this energy could mean cutting back on the appliances we use, and moderating our use of energy in the short term.

The next decade is a new era of a global energy policy, and the result could see either societies accepting the risk of nuclear energy in return for cheap energy or "changing their lifestyles" and opting for the development of greener energies with a reduced risk on our environment.

International Cost of Living Rankings July 2009

The most expensive global location to live in, as at July 2009, is still Tokyo Japan, however there have been some significant changes in the last year mainly due to large differences in exchange rates, and more recently, a real drop in prices along with the majority of global locations enjoying their lowest inflation rates in recent times.

Tokyo's cost of living index only increased by 1.4% from July 2008 to July 2009, but is 16 index points clear of 2nd placed Hong Kong (11th in July 2008). Last year Oslo, Norway, was the 2nd most expensive global location to live, however Oslo's cost of living relative to the rest of the world has decreased by 27 index points over the past year.

The cost of living indexes are based on pricing the same basket of goods in local currency and comparing them in US Dollars using exchange rates with New York as the base (New York = 100). In most cases the major factor driving the changes has been the weakening of other currencies against the US Dollar. This is the main factor behind Oslo's drop from 2nd to 13th most expensive global location to live. The Norwegian Kroner has decreased 19% against the US Dollar over the past year. In contrast the Japanese Yen has increased 12.7% against the US Dollar over the past year.

What are you going to do about this?

The price of gas is up, making food more expensive. Many super market fresh foods travel over 2,000 miles, and on the list of 20 main "fresh" foods, the least amount traveled was 700 + miles.

As many of us know, this means for the food, to arrive ripe to its destination is pick green, and gassed on the road.

But now there is flooding in the wheat belt, and many fruit crops were damaged by the winds, late frost and fires in California. This now makes the supply less. (And we aren't even talking about corn prices going up because of bio-diesel, and the international disasters ...... )

Are you willing and able to spend 40% more on food? While gas is still going up?

If not, what are you going to do?

http://www.ferryplazafarmersmarket.com/sustainable_ag/issues/foodtravel.php

i heard on the radio(npr) last year that poeple would be willing to pay for gas till 4$ then all hell would break loose. Well gas here is 4.30+ and no signs of hellfire. The best we do is complain about the price of Resources and then pay up . Truth ;1. Prices have been double what they are in the U.S. for many years in Europe and other developed parts of the world. 2. gas prices as we know it are still Very cheap for the output we get from it.
A while back a buddy said 'nature gives you free stuff' , this is true as a rule. What we pay for is the 'means' or path to the 'stuff'; the packaging , the transport, advertisement, refrigeration, Convenience?... . the list goes on . And now we will pay to make these means more 'green'! Water is a good example. People pay 2bucks for the delivery and packaging of a free resource that makes up 50-70% of Your Own Body.
The control of resources is a Deep seeded problem today. How self reliant are we?? We hear that some people around the world are simply not about to afford food that is sold . Is this our future? We should think about the small steps we need to take today that will slowly pull us away from the giant nipples of society as we know it.
Personally some tiny step I have taken; downsized my car, bought a hub motor for my bicycle and quit the Gym. There are 20 or so u-pick farms in my hood as well as true farmers markets ,they allow backyard farmers also, I found out about germinating and sprouting seed, grain, nuts and beans and the merit of taking something off the shelf after 1 or 2 years and turning it into something raw and Fresh. Got 2 water filters and drink from the tap . Ride my bike for Daily errands/groceries . Don't stock up on food that may go bad. Don't use plastic grocery bags. Have a compost bag for food scraps. .. There are a bunch of other big ones but I'll keep them secret .
