It depends upon which engine you have as to the exact cost, but replacing a rod and crankshaft will cost as much as a rebuilt engine, so that would be the way to go. Most shops would probably charge $2500 to replace a rod and crank. Any shop that doesn't advise a longblock or a good used engine is probably trying to rip you off, because you should be able to get a rebuilt longblock from Autozone or any of several other places for well under $2000, or a good low-mileage used engine for under $1000. Jasper is the most well-known engine rebuilder.
So yeah, if you are being advised to have a rod and crank replaced, you should probably go elsewhere.
Your Jeep has either a Dodge 4.7 liter V8, or a Jeep 4.0 liter inline 6 cylinder. Both are great, long-lasting engines. The V8 was/is also used in Dodge pickup trucks among other applications, and the 4 liter 6 cylinder is in millions of Wranglers, Cherokees, Grand Cherokees and Jeep pickup trucks. Because they are so common, you should be able to find a 4 liter, if that is the engine you have, for $500 from a wrecked vehicle. They last over 300,000 miles if taken care of (oil changed regularly, etc.). 4.7 V8s may cost a little more, but they are still quite common so there should be some good ones around for not too much money. With a used engine, you will probably get a 30 to 90 day warranty.
