What causes the tap sound valves make?
Valve lifter tap. Cause and remedy.
I'll add "hydraulic lifters" to that question, as they cause the same tap sound sometimes, also.
Here are the causes and remedies.
1- Your engine valves - those that let fuel in, and spent fuel out for the combustion cycle, collect "varnish" residues on their valve stems. The sticky nature of varnish slows down the closing action of the valve - and a space develops between the bottom of the valve stem and the cam that raises and lowers it. As the rotating cam lobe swings around - 10 times a minute, the space lets it slam against the valve - which you hear as a metallic tap sound. Tap, Tap,Tap.
2- If crustatious combustion carbon deposits holds the valve open a bit the same sound is heard, but a rough idle develops. Mechanics and tune techs clean the motors' idle circuit all day long to correct rough idle, and never can cure the rough idle problem. Wrong area to work on - that is why.
3- A small valve-seal inside hydraulic lifters become dirty and stick. When this happens the lifter fails to pump-up. Lifters are a complex part with its own little piston the size of your small finger tip. The piston uses oil and oil pressure to tak-up wear gap. When this little piston sticks, or the tiny valve that control oil pressure to it stick, it will collapse. That space causes the tap sound. From all this....
4- If conditions have continued for some time, your motor will sound like a sewing machine.
The fix is similar in all cases - and I'll show you a simple way to end all four problems, avoid a costly repair, and downtime. Have a stronger, running motor for it! One that will be trouble-free for years on end.
The Three Remedies
1- Tear the engine apart and do what's called a valve job. A common $2000+ expense.
2- Add a solvent or detergent additive to the oil to help with extra cleaning - and this may end the tap. One of these can also ruin your motor in minutes. I tell you which to avoid.
