Legacy Outback Cylinder

One of the most difficult challenges facing manufacturers of highly successful iconic brands is how to update it to 21st century styling without disgracing the legacy that have defined it over the years. Porsche gracefully folded its legendary 911 form into the newer 996/997 form starting in 2003 and promptly won over its holdovers.

Today, 40-year old RangeRover is about to do the same thing - unveil its flagship successor two years from now. The SUV maker plans to switch from a steel hull with aluminum panels into a full aluminum monocoque body shaving off no less than 1,100 lbs from its current 6,000 lb weight.

The planned aluminum monocoque is a radical shift from its current model's steel chassis leveraging its expertise with two generations of aluminum Jaguar XJ under its belt. It also plans to reduce power consumption with some radical hybrid powertrains using electric power.

All that is in the works but the signature RangeRover design specification from the outside must remain instantly recognizable. This design, undertaken under director Gerry McGovern has been halted. The new Evoque is a product of his design genius but it's basically the LRX concept car unveiled at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show. McGovern has his ideas about how the Ranger Rover should evolve in style and the Evoque has his imprint all over.

"But the Range Rover itself must maintain elegance and formality,"McGovern admits, intimating to Motor Trend that is basic form will get pared down compared to current models but will exude a more premium look and better interior crafting. The flagship Range Rover will remain the flagship Land Rover SUV.

The forthcoming Range Rover's aesthetics will not be a mere upscaled Evoque. It will retain the upright formality of the current Range Rover design with the unmistakable squared corners, a deep greenhouse and level roofline and hood. Its interiors will certainly focus on high end craftsmanship. Backseat comfort gets higher priority with climate-controlled reclining rear seats.

The Range Rover flagship has never failed to get continuous upgrades over the years and remains the crowning achievement in SUV technologies while maintaining its electrical, engine and powertrain heritage that have always been ahead of its time.

For instance, the current electrical systems shared with Jaguar includes TFT virtual instrumentation with the superb dual view display technology that enables the driver and front passenger to see entirely different contents on the same screen. For its North American markets, the current RangeRover is powered by a 5-liter 8-cylinder supercharged direct-injection engine delivering 500hp which, when coupled with a lighter SUV mass, promises significant fuel mileage.

But Land Rover is committed to sustainable alternative power development as it tests various hybrid configurations of its vehicles on the test track. It now has RangeRover Sport prototypes that run diesel V-6s that have an electric generator in the transmission for full parallel hybrid drive.

The US market will likely get a 120mph V-6 gas/electric hybrid with the ZF 8-speed automatic by 2013. The next Range Rover Sport will follow the 2013 Range Rover by a couple years.

Fuji Heavy Industries: Subaru Going Diesel

Announced earlier this year, Subaru tinkered with its engine design, and after some deliberation and help from Toyota manufacturer, came out with a turbo diesel engine. The engine will still maintain its claim to fame "boxer" engine design that keeps the pistons pumping horizontally rather than up and down.

With all the rage in Europe about clean burning diesels that produce less pollution and get stellar gas mileage, the car choice of Europeans in recent years have been predominantly of the diesel set. German car makers have created some serious draw from around the world, especially in Japan, where several of the big car manufacturers are releasing their diesels in Europe. One of them is the powerhouse Fuji Heavy Industries.

The car manufacturer Subaru, better known in the U.S., is actually a subsidiary of the much larger conglomerate based in Japan called Fuji Heavy Industries, Ltd (FHI for short). The two models that Subaru released are the Outback wagon and Legacy sedan. FHI, the manufacturers of Subaru Legacy parts, had to revamp their design programs to adjust for a new engine based on different physical mechanics. The new designs that when into the engine made it so the engine's center of gravity was lower in the car, upping the handling for what would be a less wieldy ride.

The two models have already landed in Spain and are going on sale soon. Later, Subaru will bring on more of their care model force with the rally legend Impreza and crossover SUV, the Forester.

The Boxer Design and Integrating Diesel Technology

The engine that was recently displayed at the Spain showrooms earlier this year is a 2.0 liter engine Boxer. This will come equipped with an aluminum-alloy cylinder block and of course the horizontal opposing piston set up. With the set up is also a turbo charger at the bottom of the block. It's the first of its kind as both a horizontal boxer diesel in a passenger car form.

FHI is doing its usual updates on manufacturing new models and have already displayed their prototypes in the U.S. and will soon have more models for the car press to cluster around later this year.
Consumers of the sporty Impreza (in world rally) will not have problems finding replacement parts as FHI manufactures Legacy car parts that are often compatible.

It's been circulating the auto world that the number one giant, Toyota may also be integrating their hybrid technology with new diesel technology.

How much should it cost to replace a head gasket in a 1997 Subaru Legacy Outback?

My mechanic is not sure of the problem, but I have been doing some research and want to know the cost incase this is the repair needed. There is an intermittent misfire in cylinder #1. I don't know the specific code, but it seems to be the same one every time I bring it in. He keeps saying he needs it to be misfiring at the very moment he checks it or he won't know what's wrong. I have taken it in over a dozen times and can't afford to go any more days without a car just for them not to fix it time and time again.

If you have any thoughts or suggestions (other than giving me a replacement price), I would greatly appreciate it. I feel I bought a lemon and it is very frustrating!

They reset the check engine light every time I go in. Maybe I need a new mechanic all together!

Wires and plugs have been replaced as far as I know. I know for sure all the plugs were replaced though.

First of all, under what conditions are you facing the miss-firing? Running cold, hot, uphill, downhill, in reverse, at a certain speed or whilst cornering even? Allow me to explain please. The head gasket keeps the radiator heating/cooling fluid separate from the cylinder and the oil and all the rest of where it's not supposed to go. Plus, when the engine is put together, you have to have something to keep the two halves of the engine from rubbing together and wearing out! (Actually, there are about six pieces to the whole engine housing not counting the oil pan) Replacing the head gasket would not only involve that gasket itself, but also the valve cover gasket as well as the timing belt housing gaskets, the belts themselves(the belts are NOT to be re-used after removal!), etc., etc. and so on. Get a new mechanic who knows what he/she is doing please! Every time your current mechanic is re-setting the engine trouble light, he's masking the problem! The car's electronic control module(e.c.m.) needs to be able to gather ALL the information it can in order to better tell the mechanic what is and isn't wrong with the car. By the way, it sounds as if you are having a ignition module or alternator problem to me. Check the ignition modual(s) first though, as you don't have to take them out of the car to test them!
