An unlikely car repair tool for the do-it-yourselfer is a stick or piece of wood much like a yardstick. It won't help you fix much of anything, but it can help you pinpoint the source of abnormal noise in your car engine.
Here is how it works. Any abnormal noise is a type of vibration. An object like a rigid stick will transmit vibration over its length, so you can use it as a sort of stethoscope to identify sources of trouble in your engine compartment. It's not especially comfortable to use, but it works.
To use this homemade stethoscope, simply place one end of the stick on suspected sources of vibration (while the engine is running) and place the other end up against your ear. Gently press closed your ear opening with a blunt end of the stick and your closed ear will act much like a speaker, allowing the sounds to be transmitted to your ear drum so you can determine the location and nature of the noise.
By placing the stick against your closed ear, you block out distracting noises of the engine and focus only on noises that produce vibration in proximity of the stick. You'll be amazed at how clearly you can hear things like bearings, push rods, valve lifters and rocker arms - anything that is moving, clicking, rubbing or slapping up against something else.
Using this technique for diagnosing the nature of car repair through sounds helps you pinpoint the source of trouble and obviates removal and internal visual inspection to diagnose the nature of the problem.
A word of caution: be very careful while placing the stick against engine components as it can be harmful to you if it gets caught up in the fan blades, fan belts or other moving parts of the engine.
The best approach is to put the stick in place first and then position it on the outside of your ear. This allows you to see where you're placing the stick so you can avoid moving parts.

Engine Repair Blaine MN: 3 Parts That May Lead to an Engine Rebuild
Did you know the engine is the heart of your car, pumping air and fuel through its system? Its basic purpose is to convert air and fuel into rotary motion to turn the wheels of the car. If the air and fuel is blocked and can't be converted into motion, an engine repair or engine rebuild may likely become necessary. It's a good idea to have your vehicle inspected and maintained by a trained auto mechanic on a regular basis to help prevent an engine rebuild.
Here are brief descriptions of 3 major components, and what to watch out for, indicating the need of a minor engine repair or possibly a complete engine rebuild:
- Pistons: Most motors have 4, 6, or 8 pistons, which move up and down in the cylinders. The pistons have rings which serve to keep the oil free of fuel and air, and keep it from entering the combustion chamber.
What can go wrong? The rings tend to wear out, allowing fuel and air to enter the oil and dilute it, reducing its ability to lubricate your engine, causing premature wear. Worn out rings also allows oil from the crankcase to enter the combustion chambers, resulting in it burning, indicated by a grayish/white smoke coming from your car's tailpipe.
- Crankshaft: The crankshaft is connected to the pistons by a connecting rod. As the piston moves up and down in the cylinder, it rotates the crankshaft and converts the straight line motion into rotary motion. The crankshaft rides on bearings, which support the crankshaft and rods, which connects the pistons to the crankshaft.
What can go wrong? These bearings eventually wear down, and you may start hearing a loud knocking noise. This problem usually leads to a costly engine repair, which may mean removing the crankshaft and either machining the surface where the bearings ride, or replacing the entire crankshaft.
- Valve train: The valve train consists of valves, rocker arms, pushrods, lifters, and camshaft. Its only job is to let air and fuel in and out of the engine at the proper time. The timing is controlled by the camshaft, which is synchronized to the crankshaft by a chain or belt.
What can go wrong? If your car smokes grayish/white smoke only when you start it up, it may have leaking valve seals. When they wear out or crack, oil can seep into the combustion chamber and collect there until you start your car again.
If you begin to suspect that your vehicle requires an engine repair or a complete engine rebuild, you will want to make sure you have it examined by a well-qualified, reputable, certified mechanic. Of course, not all vehicles will need such extensive auto repairs. However, if you even suspect that this is what your vehicle requires; don't panic.
The typical symptoms that engine repair work or an engine rebuild may be required include some of the following:
* Excessive smoke from the exhaust system
* Excessive oil consumption
* Coolant mixed with oil
* Low compression
* Overheating of the engine
Although not every single one of these symptoms alone indicates the need for a complete engine rebuild, if your vehicle begins to show any sign of these problems, it is definitely time to get a thorough inspection and diagnosis from an ASE-certified mechanic.

1993 Chevy lumina 3.1 knock?
im trying to fix this engine so i can have a decent vehicle.. the car has 80k miles on it.. it was given to me with a blown head gasket.. my father and i tore down the top end of the motor and cleaned everything the best that we could... we also replaced the lifters and pushrods...
anyways the car runs fantasticly untill it warms up and then i start hearing a chattering and knocking noise, and the oil light flickers with every knock... ive changed the oil pump and cleaned out the pan and that didnt help... ive also pulled the valve covers and re tourqued the rocker arms... everything looks perfect underneath the valve covers,very clean and new looking. it seems like i am having trouble getting the lifters the oil pressure they need to pump up.... im wondering about a clogged oil galley, if thats the case... what should i do... i know they make galley brushes but idk if there is a certain procedure or what... let me know if you have any info please... thanks
I have a 90 Lumina 3.1L Euro and while I don't have any engine problems, I have a similar issue. Mine has 98K miles. When it warms up I hear lifter noise at idle. It's not a "knock" per se. I think you have a different and more serious problem, though. I did some reading on this and I think in my car running a heaver weight oil will help. If your issue is the same as mine, you might try that. With that said, don't run 20W-50 in winter or something. I don't really have to worry about that as I live in Florida. Another thing to try is Lucas Oil Stabilizer.
I'll keep in touch with you through PM because I want to know how this turns out. Again, I think your issue is different. I hope this helps.
