Acetal is commonly known as Delrin. Formaldehyde when polymerized yields out the product known as derlin. It is the chemical composure, its structure and high crystalline structure of this material which gives a combination of such physical properties that are not available in case of other materials whether it be any plastic or any metal. Babbitt Bearings: Avoiding Overheating and Premature Failure
Bearings are primarily designed to allow smooth motion between the moving part and the bearing's contact surface. In the case of a rotating shaft, the bearing offers support to the component and is known as a rotary bearing. One such rotary bearing is a plain bearing, consisting of a smooth contact surface. The contact surfaces of these plain bearings are commonly made from materials such as Babbitt and bronze. Typically, Babbitt bearings are used in rotary equipment, such as prime movers, marine engines, and automotive engines.
There are various reasons and causes for overheating and premature failure of bearings. Some of the main reasons that cause premature bearing failure are presence of contaminants, misalignment, and insufficient lubrication. The inability to mitigate these factors is a direct consequence of overheating and premature bearing failure.
Presence of Contaminants or Foreign Particles:
The presence of contaminants or foreign particles such as dirt can cause catastrophic failure in Babbitt bearings. The dirt gets embedded into the soft Babbitt material and displaces the material, which creates raised section on the bearing surface. This raised portion comes in contact with the journal, leading to a rubbing action and eventually bearing failure. The primary reasons for the presence of dirt on the bearing surface is improper cleaning during installation and contaminated lubricating oil filters as well as oil. This type of failure can be avoided by ensuring that proper cleaning procedures are carried out during installation and lubricating oil filters are periodically cleaned to requirements.
Misalignment:
The next most common cause for bearing failure is misalignment, which can be caused by bent shafts and out-of-square locking nuts. In the event of a bent shaft, excessive wear is caused on the bearing at the point of maximum shaft distortion. In addition, the reduction in lubricating gap, allows for metal-to-metal contact between the journal and the bearing surface. Some of the possible causes for a bent shaft are over-speeding and improper handling prior to and during installation. In most cases, this can be avoided by operating the rotary equipment within the desired parameter as well as ensuring proper handling of the shaft during installation.
Insufficient Lubrication:
One of the other main causes for bearing failure is insufficient or complete lack of lubricating oil between the journal and bearing surface. The lubricating oil is vital to the operation of a plain bearing and it plays a two-part role in them. Firstly, they are used to separate the journal and bearing to prevent metal-to-metal contact, and to absorb any heat generated during operation as well. The lack of oil between the bearing and the rotating shaft leads to contact between them, causing increased wear and consequently premature bearing failure. The main causes of insufficient lubricating oil are less oil clearance, blocked oil passages, and malfunctioning lubricating oil supply system.
Reduced oil clearance can be the direct consequence of using bearings that are too thick. This can be avoided by ensuring that the correct bearing is installed. Prior to assembling and operation, all oil passages of the rotary equipment should be checked to ensure zero blockages. In addition, care should be taken to ensure that bearing misassembly does not block the bearing oil ports. A malfunctioning pump or relief valve as well as blocked oil filter can cause malfunctioning of the lubricating oil system. Proper maintenance of the pump and relief valve, along with regular cleaning of the filter, can prevent any stoppage to the supply of lubricating oil.
Other Causes of Bearing Failure:
While the above three are the main causes of bearing failure, there are few other causes such as overloading and corrosion that also cause premature bearing failure if not countered. Another common cause for the bearing failure is misassembly of either the bearing or the other components in contact with the bearings, such as connecting rods and crankshafts in engines. A misassembled rotary equipment can apply pressures and strains that the bearing is not designed for, causing excessive wear and premature bearing failure.
