In today's economic crunch, it can be tempting for hopeful entrepreneurs to renege on their once strong desires to go into business for themselves. Because most assume a very high price tag associated with purchasing a franchise business, it can seem unreasonable or perhaps even foolish to spend money when things are tight. But that conclusion is based on one very flawed presupposition: the notion that all franchises are more costly than the average businessperson can afford. In fact, there are many business opportunities that can be started for an initial purchase price no greater than the value of a mid-sized sedan, and a business is certain to bring in greater revenue than a Toyota. If you've been pondering the business options available to you and have lost the hope of being able to afford a franchise business, here are 10 great, low-cost businesses you may want to take a look at.
1. US Lawns
Regardless of whether you've had previous experience in the landscaping industry, this 22-year-old company is the choice for anyone wanting to make a go of it. Today US Lawns is the largest and fastest growing commercial landscaping business around, specializing in serving the lawn and garden needs of only commercial clients, like offices buildings and apartment complexes. The initial cost and overhead are very low, and overhead only increases as the franchise grows.
2. Von Schrader Carpet Cleaning
One of the best known and respected names in carpet cleaning, this business has been in operation since 1935 and has seen over 50,000 work at home franchisees benefit from its proven methods. Initial franchising fees and startup capital requirements are very low, and with most franchisees reporting that they see a return income of $40/hr, it pays off rather rapidly. And for those who can't afford the initial costs but are interested in the franchise opportunity, financing help is available.
3. Wood Defender
Every year millions of feet of wood privacy fencing goes up around the country as people opt to separate their yards from the outside world, but without the proper finishing stain to seal the wood, weather wears on that fencing at an alarming rate. Wood Defender franchisees are taught how to properly stain 200 feet of fence in under an hour and make over $700 in the process. With an initial price on this home business that varies depending on each person's commitment level, it's the perfect opportunity for both the fulltime entrepreneur and the weekend warrior.
4. Value Forward Management Coaching
While most coaching companies accept any and all entrepreneurs and teach them how to help small businesses, Value Forward Management Coaching does things a little differently. Taking only those entrepreneurs with a history of executive experience lasting at least 10 years, Value Forward Management Coaching then teaches them how to serve clients operating $2mil-$300mil companies. It's the low startup business for the longtime business professional.
5. Fabulous Floors
Depending on the territory size a franchisee is interested in, this low-cost business costs between $20,000 and $30,000, making it a very affordable opportunity for a talented handyman to start a turnkey home based business. Equipped with a proven business model and equipment that allows for the quick, odorless, and dustless refinishing of hardwood floors, franchisees can be well on their way to financial independence in only 30 days.
6. Let's Gogh Art
Though it's primarily targeted at children, the venue options for this low-cost franchise opportunity are many, ranging from afterschool centers to corporate team building days. For much less than the cost of most franchises, Let's Gogh Art licensees purchase access to one of nine different curricula models, instructor materials, a 45-mile protected territory, and much more.
7. Eagle's Nest Homes
If you have a knack for sales and a passion for home construction, this is your business. Become a professional seller of panelized homes, one of the most cost-effective methods of construction available, which ultimately produces a home appraisal up to 25% higher than local market value. Provide your clients with the choice of over 50 house models and the option to go green, an increasingly popular alternative to standard construction.
8. Moneylendingbusiness.com
Online payday loans are a big business these days, and for a very low startup cost, you can profit from the industry with a Moneylendingbusiness.com business. Unlike a franchise, this work from home opportunity comes with no royalty fees and the right to make up your own company name instead of taking that of the franchisor, but of course you still receive all the benefits of having a franchisor looking out for you and helping you refine your business. With all the necessary software and business structures you can begin profiting from payday loans online or in person as you see fit.
9. PreQuence
Serving the housing industry with one of the newest advertising methods available, PreQuence franchisees are responsible for sending clients real estate listings via cellular text messages. It's a green alternative to paper fliers that saves on personal cost, frees up the franchisee's schedule, and makes the advertising far more convenient for the client.
10. Candy Bouquet
If you're interested in purchasing a cheap retail franchise that is unlike anything else out there, Candy Bouquet is the way to go. Unlike a bouquet of flowers, candy never wilts, fades, or dies, making it the perfect gift alternative. With a full array of initial training, access to easy online product purchasing, and protected territories, franchisees receive all they need to really sell this wonderful product.
Our economy may not be in its finest days right now, but that doesn't mean it's a bad time to start a business. There are many cheap franchises that are as viable business options as their pricier and rather inaccessible counterparts, and they're just waiting for the perfect franchisee to come along and profit from them. Be that entrepreneur and see what your low initial investment can turn into.

So you have finally brought your dream house in Spain. How much is it going to cost you to run?
So you have finally brought your dream house in Spain.
How much is it going to cost you to run?
Perhaps one of the many reasons for purchasing a property in Spain is the cost of living. Can you really believe what your commission only sales rep of an estate agent has told you!
Well in short the answer, credit crunch/exchange rates aside is - Not as much as in England that is for certain!
SERVICES.
You will have the usual day to day running costs as you would expect. Water, gas and electric, these are not a lot different than in England with the added bonus that as it is much warmer here you do not incur so much in the way of heating bills, you may want to have air conditioning running but why lock yourself away in a sealed house when all you need to do is wear less and have the odd fan blowing. The systems you can get installed can run as heaters as well because you must realise it does get a little colder in the winter. The units do cost more to run as coolers than as heaters. Inverter aircon units are a little more expensive to purchase but the running costs over a 5 year period will repay that extra investment. Gas is not commonplace in Spain.
Water is a valuable commodity in Spain, so do not waste it. Save rainwater in tanks, turn off the water when brushing your teeth or "soaping up" in the shower. Evaporation from swimming pools even in the winter increases consumption so cover the pool in the winter. Once your garden is bedded in, the plants will not need as much water, so reduce the time the irrigation system is on by half.
Top Tip: Invest in a portable gas heater. You can move it into which ever room you are using. The gas bottles are available everywhere and can be delivered. The bottles cost about €12 and allow €100 for the heater. In the summer you can always use the gas bottles to power the BBQ. If you house has an upstairs, invest in a set of curtains so that you only heat downstairs, this also helps in reducing any drafts. Remember that these houses are designed to keep you cool 9 months of the year. A little effort is needed to keep them warmer.
SUMA (RATES)
Yes you do still have to pay rates in Spain but not as much as most pay in England. The rates here are collected by a collection company called SUMA. They collect everything from rates for your house, tax for your car and bills for you access to water etc. They will bill you annually for such things like your rates (IBI) car tax etc. You pay these bills in you bank and they will stamp the bill as proof of payment.
Top Tip: If you feel that you have been over charged you need to see your financial representative or solicitor who will question the bill on your behalf. As much as I hate to say this, it is best to pay the bill and then question it as any reduction in the bill will be offset by the late payment fine. With bills like the IBI it is best to check with neighbours how much they pay for similar properties. You will find that values are set by the Catastral. Urban or Urbanised land is higher taxed than rural land.
CARS.
I would recommend purchasing in Spain. If you do bring your own vehicle the first obstacle is that the steering wheel is on the wrong side. Not too much of a problem unless you want to overtake one of the many slow moving lorries, get in and out of carparks, or pay tolls on the motorways. Your car will need to go through a rigorous technical inspection (ITV = MOT in UK) and if the headlamps cannot be adjusted then new headlight will be required (£500 for a Ford Focus). You will also be liable to a whole range of taxes/fees for registering the vehicle and endless hours queuing in the dreaded Trafico offices. When you come to sell, the car will be all but worthless and Spanish main dealers will not want to touch the car. Spare parts as well can be expensive and may need to be imported.
If you purchase a car in Spain, if you can afford to buy new as new cars are cheaper than in the UK, but second hand are more expensive as the Spanish keep hold of cars for longer. A new car is exempt from the MOT for the first 4 years, it is every two years thereafter until the vehicle is 8 years old and it is then every year.
Top Tip: The bureaucracy when it comes to motoring in Spain is legendary. When purchasing a car try to get the dealer to complete the paperwork for you. If you want to buy, sell, register or deregister your vehicle there are forms, forms and forms to fill in as well as fees. To change keepers in the UK you send in the V5 and that is it. In Spain you fill in forms, stand in queues and pay exorbitant fees of several hundred euros. No wonder the Spanish don't change cars very often. If you can afford to use one of the many people/companies who advertise their services to do the legwork on your behalf.
TAX.
The tax implications are a little different from England but follow a similar sort of process. You are advised to seek professional help in these matters as you would in England and will probably save the money that the specialist has cost you by being able to claim everything you are entitled to. Remember that like England the tax laws change from time to time.
Top Tip: Word of mouth is the best way to find a good tax representative. Listen to what friends and neighbours have to say. You will often be given a free consultation when approaching a prospective representative, so make good use of it. Not only do Spanish tax rules change on a regular basis but so do the UK rules, so try and find a representative who is up to speed in both countries.
In general you will find the cost of living in Spain much cheaper than in the UK. It is getting more expensive as the credit crunch bites deeper, but as we all say I would rather be a little short in the sun in Spain than the rain, sleet and greyness of the UK .
Please note that all of the above was written and to the very best of my knowledge is 100% correct at the time of going to print. Tomorrow the rules could change ..... and the day after...

House heating natural gas or plug in?
My girlfriend and I are renting the main floor of a house. Its a 5br college house with poor insulation (I'm going to seal the windows). The upstairs is heated by electronic baseboards, the main floor is not. Our landlord has said heating will be $400-$500 a month for the main floor which is heated by natural gas.
I've used $50 plug in heaters from Walmart and know they would heat our main floor well enough if we bought two. So would it be cheaper to pay for the electricity to power the plug in heaters?
Thanks!
Making heat with electricty is expensive. If you want to save money on heat, turn the temperature way down cool. then if you use a small electric heater just in the area you are and only when you are there. That is about the best way to save money.
