25 Interesting Facts about the Mercedes Benz Part 1

Do you know much about the Mercedes-Benz? It is a fascinating car. In fact, it’s one of the most celebrated cars in the history of automobiles. Here are 25 interesting facts about this well renowned vehicle.

  1. Mercedes-Benz employs one inspector per 11 workers, paying them to criticize the crap out of them. Before a Benz gets the final stamp of approval, thousands of individual inspections have taken place.
  2. Mercedes Parts are top notch. Every single Mercedes-Benz is welded in 10,000 places. No bolts will go loose and the rattles, squeaks, and groans are kept to a minimum.
  3. A Mercedes suspension is super stable and firm. This is because every Benz sits on a fully independent swing axle suspension system which had originally been used on the company’s racing machines.
  4. In place of the typical valve actuation, All Mercedes-Benz engines utilize overhead camshafts. This allows the driver to reach the highest engine speeds while experiencing a very smooth, quiet, and safe ride.
  5. Benz are famed for their vibration-free, high-speed cruising comfort. This is enabled with the help of million-dollar machines that electronically balance every Mercedes-Benz crankshaft.
  6. Before engines are mounted to the car, each one is test-run multiple times. During these routine checks, the engine’s oil is replenished sixty plus times to completely flush out unwanted dirt and debris.
  7. Each model carries disc brakes on all four wheels as a standard. Both the front and rear braking systems are activated individually so that if one system fails, the other will take over.
  8. During assembly, suspension steering and brake parts are tightened by hand with the use of a unique wrench-designed exclusively for Mercedes-Benz engineers. When the exact pressure point is reached, a yellow paint glob is squirted onto the part. When the follow-up inspection takes place, these yellow spots are counted to ensure that each was assembled accurately.
  9. After undergoing a series of four important tests, each coil spring is selected to form a matching set. This gives Benz passengers a balanced ride.
  10. As a way to combat road shocks, each Mercedes-Benz steering system carries a tiny built-in shock absorber so that your driving hands are comfortable under any condition.
  11. Before sealing, the hollow or hidden parts on a Benz are brushed with a zinc dust compound as a way to foil the inroads of condensation and future rust.
  12. Workmanship is at its absolute best when it comes to Mercedes Parts. After welding takes place, all the vital body parts of a Mercedes Benz are ground down by hand, packed with a pewter, then ground down once more followed by a polishing that increases invisibility.

Rebuilding transmission on Mercedes ML350?

I have a 2004 Mercedes ML 350 with ~95K miles on it. A couple of days ago a "Low Range" light came on and yesterday the "Check Engine" light came on. I took it to the dealer for diagnosis this morning and they told me that my transmission is hosed. They are saying that to fully replace the transmission will cost me $14K and to rebuild my existing one will cost $6,400. After initial shock, I've decided to take it for the second opinion. When I informed the dealer that I will pick up the car they told me that they will charge me $500 (!) for putting it back together. After haggling with them back and forth they said that they will rebuid the transmission for $3,200 (50% discount from the original quote). What should I do? Any suggestions? Is it a standard practice to charge for "diagnosis"?

Yes it is standard practice for a diagnosis fee. There are expenses involved for time, light, all that kind of stuff. Ever go into a doctor's office for free? $3200 for a Mercedes rebuild is a bargain. Take it if you are overall comfortable with the dealer.
