The skyrocketing price of gasoline is hurting everyone. Here in the US the price of gas has gone up over a dollar a gallon in a single year and showing no signs of stopping. People now have to budget their gas money where before most of us paid it out of pocket change and didn't think anything about long Sunday drives or going upstate to Grandma's or across town to visit friends on weekends.
Gone are the days of the backyard hot rodders where guys used to gather under shade trees while bent over their open car hoods and talk about the latest 4 barrel carb. setup or the newest cam designs. Words like pop-up pistons, over sized valves, and stroker cranks were common language. All of them would make you car have loads of horsepower, and all of them would guarantee you'd stop at your friendly gas station three times more often.
People with motor homes and big RV's are trying to sell them because the can't afford the gas to take long far away vacations and all the guys who so proudly drove their big V8 engine pickup trucks with the big mudder tires are trading them in for their smaller V6 or 4 cylinder counterparts. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that a vehicle that get 24-30 miles per gallon is better than one that only gets 10-14 mpg.
Cars like VW's and Toyota's are more and more popular these days especially the old VW bugs that got 40 mpg. Other makes like Honda, Nissan, Kia, mini-cooper to name a few are also in the lineup. Its not surprising that the foreign car manufacturer's have surpassed sales on all US makes and models and a lot of plants that build the larger American automobiles are closing doors and going out of business.
The problem with electric cars is that battery technology is not what it could be and while they may be great for short jaunts around town, they are not made for long trips. Theres a big push the world over to make cars that run off of hydrogen or water and that seems to be the best direction to take as of right now. Wouldn't it be great to have a car that you could gas up from your garden hose? The Japanese already have a prototype that runs off distilled water and hopefully before long they will have such cars available to the general public.
