Woud my Ac Clutch Freeze up my engine on my car?
I have a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP I drove over 300 miles today on it & when I went to see my uncle in the hospital & was getting ready to go home it wouldn't start, tried jumping my car thought that what it was, got a new battery, & then come to find out my A/C Clutch is frozen so it went out, is there a way I can bypass it or what do I need to do to get my car up & running. When I looked @ my Serpentine belt it looked like it was worn down to almost nothing because of the clutch. Or could it be my started on my car, I know alitte about cars not much tho, Thanks in advance..
Yes, a froze up AC clutch can prevent an engine from starting. The drag on the pulley reduces the engine rpms needed for the engine to start. The most common problem with GM 3.8L engines is the alternator. I have replaced a lot of these. What usually happens is the bearing in the alternator seizes. Seen this happen to some GM trucks also.
If you don't want to spend 400 bucks on repairing the AC, most aftermarket parts stores can order a substitute pulley assembly. These are found in the Help section and cost around 40 bucks. This is a pulley and mounting bracket assy. I used one on my caprice when the AC went bad. I live in the midwest, so I don't have to have AC.
Check to make sure your vehicle has a decal that shows the belt routing before removing the belt. If one isn't present, most auto parts stores can print it out for you. Do replace the serpentine belt with a new one and don't just try to bypass it by routing a shorter belt. This may cause some components to rotate in reverse of how they were designed, ie. waterpump, alter., or ps.
Before installing the new belt, double check the rest of the pulleys for play and excess wear.
To remove the belt requires a 3/8th inch drive ratched or a 15mm wrench. The wrench fits the bolt on the tensioner and the ratched fits a 3/8th box that is molded into the tensioner.
