Danger! It lurks at every corner. Volcanoes. Sharks. Quicksand. Terrorists. The pilot of the plane blacks out and it's up to you to land the jet. What do you do? The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook is here to help: jam-packed with how-to, hands-on, step-by-step, illustrated instructions on everything you need to know FAST-from defusing a bomb to delivering a baby in the back of a cab. Providing frightening and funny real information in the best-selling tradition of the Paranoid's Pocket Guide and Hypochondriac's Handbook, this indispensable, indestructible pocket-sized guide is the definitive handbook for those times when life takes a sudden turn for the worse. The essential companion for a perilous age. Because you never know... How to Wrestle Free from an Alligator: 4. If its jaws are closed on something you want to remove (for example, a limb), tap or punch it on the snout. Though it's being marketed as a humorous title--after all, it's unlikely you'll be called upon to land a plane, jump from a motorcycle to a moving car, or win a swordfight--the information contained in The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook is all quite sound. Authors Joshua Piven and David Borgenicht consulted numerous experts in their fields (they're cited at the end of the book) to discover how to survive various and sundry awful events. Parachute doesn't open? Your best bet for survival is to hook your arms through the straps of a fellow jumper's chute--and even then you're likely to dislocate both shoulders and break both legs. Car sinking in water? Open the window immediately to equalize pressure, then open the car door and swim to the surface. Buried in an avalanche? Spit on the snow--it will tell you which direction is really up. Then dig as fast as you can. Each survival skill is explained in simple steps with helpful illustrations. Most stress the need to be prepared--both mentally and physically. For example, to escape from quicksand, you will need to lay a pole on the surface of the quicksand, flop on your back atop the pole, and pull your legs out one by one. No pole? No luck. "When walking in quicksand country, carry a stout pole--it will help you get out should you need to." Hopefully you'll never need to know how to build a fire without matches, perform a tracheotomy, or treat a bullet wound. But in the words of survival evasion resistance escape instructor "Mountain" Mel Deweese, "You never know." --Sunny Delaney |

Easy DIY Tips to Free Your Frozen Emergency Brake
The emergency brake of a car, otherwise named parking brake or hand brake, is a purely mechanical system. Unlike most "regular" car brakes that are operated by hydraulics, emergency brake of a vehicle is operated by a system of cable(s) and springs, which is covered by a sheath.
In cold environmental condition, many times it so happens that water gets trapped inside the sheath and freeze solid. The ice then prevents the cable inside the sheath from sliding thereby making the entire system inoperative. Jamming of the cable by dried dirt and grease is also a common phenomenon with parking brakes. In such situations, it takes a lot of time for the hand brake to get back to its normal operational state. But if you know the tricks you can thaw it easily. Here's how you do that:
First, start the car engine. Then release and set the hand brake repeatedly in order to dislodge any frozen solid particles from inside the brake system.
If the emergency brake is still frozen, block as much of the open space between sides of the vehicle and the ground.
Now, shovel snow or pile up other material along the sides of the car. The objective of doing this is to create an airflow path from front to the rear of the car so that any "losses" from the under the sides of the vehicle are minimized.
Then leave the car ALONE for sometime, and allow it to "warm up". Once the car engine has warmed sufficiently, the heated air pulled through the car radiator and heat created by the car exhaust system will pass under the entire length of the vehicle. This will expedite the entire thaw process significantly.
Finally, attempt to release the parking brake or hand brake again. If you find it still frozen, allow some more time for the brake system to thaw, and/or block any remaining open spaces at the front and rear of the vehicle. To increase the heat generated therein, depress the accelerator slightly. This will speed up the mechanical fan of the car engine, and force more hot air underneath the vehicle.
While doing all these, make two things sure- the end of the car exhaust pipe is not be obstructed in any way, and the exhaust gases from it is not trapped under the vehicle.
Follow these few simple steps, and your car emergency brake will soon be operational.
About the Author
I am Lavanya Gupta from India, a content writer by profession. I have kin interest in art & architecture and handicrafts. But there is one thing that drives me crazy, that is cars. It has been quite a while that I have been writing auto and car related articles for various web portals. Amongst all these, my favorite one is Auto Guide that is an Automotive industry B2B marketplace.
What'is the best way to troubleshoot a rear brake light problem - 92 Prelude. Lights and fuses were replaced.
My '92 Honda Prelude's rear brake lights will not work when the brake pedal is engaged. In addition, the instrument panel brake light warning indicator remains in the "on-position" while the car is running. However, I have replaced brake lights, fuses, and checked all visible wire connections leading to the rear brake light cluster module. All other rear lights work including turn signal, parking, reverse and emergency indicators.
That has a fuse of it's own, but you should be looking at the brake switch that is about half way up the brake peddle arm. Unplug that thing and jumper between the wires with a paper clip and if the brake lights work replace that switch.. Check the wires going into the steering column if you don't have separate turn signal lights and brake lights because if they use the same bulb then the turn signal may be bad. If I remember correctly that particular car doesn't work this way, but I include it just in case.
