When one refers to a universal printer driver it does not mean all of them are actually universal like all the drivers are using exactly the same techniques when it comes to communicating with a printing device and executing a job. The word 'universal' really means that the driver can virtually drive any printing device on any operating system. When making a comparison of these drivers, three different drivers can be identified.

Universal Printer Driver Based On a Standard Printer Driver

A universal printer driver made and designed using a standard driver was the very first kind of its own to be ever used. In this method a normal standard printer driver was modified to work as a universal driver. More often than not the drivers used were the HP drivers that included the HP LaserJet 4/5 used when monochrome printing was required and the HP LaserJet 4500 when color printing was the need of the hour. These two drivers could handle print jobs sent from computers to many HP printing machine

Now this technique was not a universal printer driver exactly but it was a good replacement and a good example of a universal print driver as it was not made for the specific HP printing device but worked well none the less. Though this was the very first instance of a universal print driver it is now reaching the end of its existence.

A similar type of universal driver for printing was used by Citrix for their mainframe or presentation server right until their version four. However, a few SBC products are still successfully using this kind of driver. Another universal driver is the MS Fallback driver for printing widely in use today.

The MS Fallback universal driver is usually preinstalled in the software package you have purchased and so there is no need to buy additional software, besides this is easy to maintain and troubleshoot. However, one drawback with this driver is that it does not support some printing devices and has a lot of limitations with duplex sessions and tray support.

Universal Printer Driver Based On the EMF Format

EMF is the format Windows uses to render a print command. A specified driver creates an EMF file and sends it to the Windows spooler. The print job is transferred via the EMF driver to the windows client printer product. The product client for printing receives the print EMF file and sends it on to the client print spooler.

The drawback here is that EMF is only used on Windows platforms and so this kind of driver can only be used on Windows operating system. These EMF files are also larger than the PDF based files.

EMF files are sent to the printing machine on the client this way the server does not have to do so much work. When using an EMF based Universal driver the original quality of the job is unaltered.

Universal Printer Driver based On the PDF Format

This is the least common kind of universal driver used for printing. Here the EMF file is created using the client's spooler in a PDF format and sometimes a PCL file is created. This is sent to the client where it is rendered into the EMF format and the print job is sent to the printing machine.

Arkansas State picked to finish middle of the road in 2011

Arkansas State Red Wolves picked to finish middle of the road in 2011
by John "JJBeatz" Jacobson

Jonesboro, Arkansas-Former Offensive Coordinator Hugh Freeze takes over as head coach for Steve Roberts.  As a first year coordinator for the Red Wolves last year, he helped the team finish with the 2nd best offense in the Sun Belt Conference.  Coach Freeze brings in the experienced Dave Wommack as his defensive coordinator as Arkansas State looks to improve upon a tough year on defense.
Arkansas State's  4-4 season in the Sun Belt Conference last year can only be described as inconsistent.  After two consecutive dominant performances against Florida Atlantic (37-16) and a Tuesday Night ESPN 51-24 thrashing of Middle Tennessee State, in the following week the Red Wolves dropped a home game to the league's doormat, the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.   I guess when a team gives up over 430 yards per game on defense, including over 200 on the ground, every game is a challenge.
This year's team looks to expand upon a great offensive year with First Team All Sun Belt Conference QB Ryan Aplin back for his junior year behind a line that must replace all but one starter from last year.   Only 2nd Team ASBC Tom Castilaw returns on the line.  The receiving core looks solid with Sr. WR Dwayne Frampton (69-738, 6tds), Jr. WR Alan Muse (42-635, 5tds) and Jr. Talyor Stockemer returning. The running back position also has talent returning with Sr. Derick Lawson who had his longest run of the run verse Troy last year (36 yards), Sirgregory Thornston (38-258, ly) and the lead rusher of the spring game, Sr. Jermaine Roberston (67yds,sp).  For the offense, the skill positions look solid.  However, can the offensive line which will have players who saw limited action last year e.g. Eric Allen and Delanor Moore step up, gel, and provide the blocking and protection needed to let Aplin and gang do their thing?  That's the main question for the Arkansas Red Wolves in 2011.

On defense, 1st year DC Dave Wommack brings a more aggressive style to the Red Wolves defense.   As stated earlier, the defense gave up 430 yards per game last year ranking towards the bottom in the nation.  Stopping the run was a big problem.  Although the numbers were poor from a year ago, the defensive line did produce.  Despite losing 1st team ASBC DL Bryan Hall, the good news is that there is experience returning.  Amos Draper, Brandon Joiner, Justin Robertson, Dorvus Woods, and Jeremy Gibson, who all either started or saw lots of time, are back for 2011.  The linebacker returns 1st team ASBC LB Demario Davis who led the team in tackles (63 in 2010, 80 in 2009), Nick Nelms(28 tackles, 2010),and Nathan Herrold.  They do lose 2nd Team ASBC, Javon McKinnon.  In the secondary, they lose 1st team Safety M.D. Jennings, but return just about everyone else including CB Darron Edwards who started every game last year and Tausean Holmes, who started at nickel and had 51 tackles.  So the experience is there for the defense to improve under Dave Wommack and reports have it that Coach Freeze has been very excited about the way the defense has been "flying around" under the new system.  I do expect improvement from the Red Wolves on defense but still see a lack of run stopping ability that is required of a good defense.
If the offensive line can come together and if Dave Wommack's defense can improve against the run, the Arkansas State Red Wolves will fair fine in the SBC.  My expectations are that it will take some time for the pieces to come together leaving the Red Wolves with approximately 5 wins for the season with no chance for a bowl game.

Sun Belt Football 2010 Preview: Ranking The Offensive Lines
This is the fourth in a series of articles ranking the Sun Belt Conference's football teams unit-by-unit. In a league where so many offenses rely heavily on three- and four-receiver packages, offensive linemen have their work cut out for them. Teams who can't protect their quarterbacks or open lanes for their running backs will do little more than frustrate their coaches and fans. The Sun Belt ...
