Needle bearings are also known as needle roller bearings. They are bearings that contain small cylindrical rollers. They are important in order to lessen friction while a certain surface is being rotated. When compared to ball bearings, they cover larger surface areas. The structure has a shaft or an inner race, a needle cage, needle rollers and the outer race. The needle cage is where the needle rollers are contained and oriented.

There are actually different designs and applications for needle bearings. The design actually depends upon the industry where the tool will be needed. Below, you will see what these designs are and where the industrial product is being applied.

Basic designs for needle roller bearings

There are two basic designs for needle roller bearings: one is the full complement or loose-needle; and the other is the caged-needle bearing designs. The loose needles are those that contain full complement needles with no retainers. They are often found in between components of two hardened machines. These are inexpensive but only have moderate speeds and can often lead to misalignment sensitivities.

Caged needles on the other hand contain cages with specific roller spacing and guidance. When compared with loose-needles, they are three times faster. The needle cage allows for prevention of high-velocity rubbing in between needles that are adjacent to each other plus it also provides better roller guidance. They also produce better lubricant capabilities. With the smaller needles complementing each other, load capacity is reduced.

Other designs for needle roller bearings

Alongside the two basic designs are different subcategories. With loose needles, drawn cups are also produced. Drawn cups may also be applicable in caged assemblies. For heavy-duty needle roller bearings, aircraft bearings and cam or track followers are also designed.

Drawn cups for loose needles have spherical-ended rollers with an outer race. This adds up slightly on load capacity for the machine. The caged-needle version differs in the sense that retainers are being used. These provide higher speed with a reduced load capacity. It promises greater tolerance in cases of misalignment.

As the name implies, heavy-duty needle bearings are made out of heavy-duty materials. Heavy outer rings work well with high-precision ground and hardened materials. The load capacity for this design is extremely high.

Needle roller bearing applications

Needle bearings are often used in farm equipment, construction tools and machinery, small gasoline engines and gear pumps. It is also especially helpful in automotive transmissions, aircraft controls, small appliance and tool motors. Hydraulic pumps, sheave blocks, hoist drum shaft, material handling equipment are also included on the list of needle roller bearing applications.

Cadillac Srx Flaunts Hand-crafted Auto Elegance

To boost the Cadillac SRX appeal, General Motors is setting a new trend by using hand-crafted features in the crossover’s interior.

The newest Cadillac addition utilizes Cadillac’s new “cut-and-sew” interior process on its cabin design. Said design combines advanced technology with the hand-rendered exactitude of expert craftsmen. In addition, coverings for components like the instrument panel, center console and door trim are cut, sewn and wrapped mostly by hand. Hence, the meticulous and reliable quality of the hand-crafted features and accessories of the vehicle can be had in the new SRX.

The Cadillac SRX which was launched in Europe in 2004 combines sporty performance and dynamic driving to deliver superb off-road and on-road capabilities. For the model year 2007, the vehicle is enhanced to deliver superior cream-of-the-crop elegance via hand-crafted auto features. The vehicle comes in a rear-wheel-drive V-6 model and an enhanced V-8 Northstar model with six-speed automatic gearbox, a Sport Package and the option of RHD.

“The SRX is the latest and most complete example of our new approach to interiors, blending advanced technology with the hand craftsmanship that was once – and is again becoming – a Cadillac trademark,” said Jim Taylor who is Cadillac’s general manager. “This new interior adds to SRX’s compelling package of design, performance, luxury and value, within the practicality of a crossover vehicle.”

The Cadillac SRX also gets a new sport appearance package that includes two exhaust tips, wire mesh treatment, two tire choices, and finally the striking body-color grille and rear fascia. The package with the 18-inch tires is priced at $32000 while the package with 20-inch wheels is priced at $3,945. The 20-inch wheels cost $1,700. The new vehicle from the automaker is equipped with improved Cadillac Escalade parts as well as those of the STS. The auto parts include a new $2,345 Bose 5.1 Cabin Surround digital audio system. In addition, the new SRX is also given significant tweaks.

The Cadillac SRX retains its title as the division’s first-ever luxury crossover vehicle that lives by its automaker’s bold design vocabulary with its crisp, sharp-edged look, striking vertical headlights, bold front side sections and the V-shaped front narrowing into the classic Cadillac grille.

The Cadillac SRX is now offered with broader powertrain options that include the 4.6-litre, 32-valve V-8 Northstar engine which is extensively re-engineered and mounted longitudinally in the first all wheel-drive application of the Northstar engine family. It is made more sophisticated and technically advanced. In fact, it is now capable of generating 239 kW (325 hp) at 6500 rpm and 427 Nm of torque at 4400 rpm. The sophistication is now further improved by a new and more responsive efficient six-speed automatic transmission.

The 3.6L V-6 VVT power plant, on the other hand, produces 190 kW (258 hp) at 6500 rpm and 339 Nm of torque at 2700 rpm. The 60-degree dual overhead cam (DOHC), 24-valve powerplant offers electronic throttle control, multi-port fuel injection, variable valve timing, aluminum block and cylinder heads, two-stage roller chain cam drive, and a forged steel crankshaft mated to a five-speed automatic gearbox. The V-6 is now also available with a reasonably priced rear-wheel drive option.

Both 5- and 6-speed Automatic transmissions offer Driver Shift Control, downgrade detection with brake assist, electronically controlled engine braking, and Performance Algorithm Liftfoot. Aficionados in the industry are saying that the brand new elegance offered by the Cadillac SRX is worth indulging.

355 SBC Brownfield aluminum heads....?

Long block Chevy 350 bored to a 355. Has a complete roller set up: Comp Cams Roller cam, roller lifters. Chevy High Performance 1.6 roller rockers. Pete Jackson noisy gear drive. Complete set of racing aluminum heads (Brownsfield) with Comp Cam springs, valves and retainers. These heads came off a 400 funny car and ran only a few times. Compression is 10:1.
Heads are port matched and polished along with a Victor Jr. single plane intake to match.
.....Do you guys think it's a good buy for $1800??? From what I know AFR purchased Brownfield back in the day, the Heads any good??. Thanks

With those heads your looking at 540hp/480tq on your motor according to my desktop Dyno simulation.

If you go for cheaper heads like Edelbrocks, you will be: 495hp/460tq.

I personally think you could spend that much and make another set of heads better and they would be new.

If these ones you are getting are aluminum, then you could have micro-fractures near the exhaust vavle seats that can cause issue later down the line come up suddenly. Those are very stressed heads and would be really worth $800pair as they sit.
