A frost plug heater is an electric heater that heats the engine of a vehicle to give quicker starts and protects your engine from damage that can occur during cold weather starts. Warmed engines also deliver better fuel economy, plus improves oil flow to provide better lubrication to the engine, which reduces wear and increases engine life. The frost plug heater also cuts back on pollution as it aids in vaporization of fuel, thereby cutting back on emissions.

Before putting your boat and outboard motor away this fall perform these simple maintenance tasks below and your boat will be ready for the water next spring instead of the boat shop.

Before heading out on your last boating trip make sure to ad a fuel stabilizer to the gasoline. Products such as Stabil and Seafoam will prevent gasoline from developing a varnish like residue in the fuel delivery system of your outboard. Costly carberator cleaning costs can easily be avoided with this simple and inexpensive preventative maintenance step.

Now's the time to change to the lower unit oil, not next spring after costly damage has occurred. When water enters a lower unit and freezes over the winter time it expands with a lot of force which can crack a gear case. This is a very expensive repair that you certainly want to avoid. When changing the gear oil water is easily detected by observing it drain or by the old oil looking a grey milky color. If no water is present simply continue changing the oil. If water is present be sure to have a outboard mechanic determine the leak and fix it before more costly repairs come in the near future. To change the oil in a lower unit simply remove both upper and lower screws on the lower unit. After old oil has drained squeeze or pump new oil into the lower unit from the bottom screw, do not fill from the top screw. Once oil starts coming out of the top screen quickly remove fill stem and insert bottom screw. Next insert top screw and verify tightness of both.

Changing spark plugs is an easy task that can be done your self versus paying a mechanic. Worn plugs can cause a motor to start hard and miss when idling. After getting new spark plugs from a local auto parts store be sure to gap the new plugs. Then install to manufactures specified torque.

Now is also a good time to make any repairs that were put off for a later date this summer. Also check lighting, bilge and live well pumps for proper operation. These pumps should only make a humming sound, not a high pitched whining noise and replace as necessary. It also a good idea to remove lead acid batteries at this time and store indoors to prevent freezing.

By completing these simple maintenance tasks in the fall your boat will be ready for the water this spring with out any big surprises and potential costly repairs also avoided.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE A WATER MAIN BREAK

What do you do if you think you may have a water main break? First off, call a licensed plumber to verify the problem. There are things you or a professional can do to verify the problem, and possibly relieve the situation.

In NYC there is a 311 system, call 311 and ask for a NYC DEP representative to come out to your property. A specially trained person will arrive shortly to determine if your service line is leaking or not. In NYC if your service is determined as being defective a Department of Environmental Protection representative will issue a "Three Day Notice". This sounds ominous, but it is more or less a free insurance policy. The DEP has just taken responsibility for determining the source of the leak. On the few occasions where a notice is issued in error, there is a process for putting in a claim and seeking reimbursement for all costs in determining the source of the leak i.e. hiring a plumber to perform repairs requested by the DEP notice. My guess is that their determinations are correct over 95% of the time.

You may ask how you can test the line, or source of the leak yourself. Well it is much simpler than you may think. Turning off the main control valve that is located on the house side of the water service is the first step. If the water service is not leaking, there will be no sound on the line. Running water always makes a sound; therefore if there is no leak on the water serviced there will be no sound. How to listen for a sound? Place your ear, or a metal rod or equivalent on the water service and the other end on your ear. Listen carefully. If you hear a sound, you should take a second step as a running toilet or other defective plumbing fixture could be causing a sound on the line. You would then have to drain down the inside plumbing by opening an upstairs and downstairs sink to drain down the house (you will have to open two fixtures to allow for air to displace the water leaving your plumbing system, it allows the water to drain out faster). If you still hear a sound- uh, oh, you have a water service line leak. If the leak slows or stops in all likelyhood the leak is on the house side of the main control valve, therefore your water main is not broken. Inside plumbing problems typicall cost a fraction of having to replace a water service line. There are other intricacies to this, but that is the basics of it.

If the water leak is coming into a sewer pit, you can open the sewer trap to give the water a place to drain out but be careful. Never open the "street side" trap plug. Always open the "house side" trap plug. By doing this you will prevent any sewer gas from escaping into your house, and prevent any dirt or debris from the leak from going down your sewer line. Another thing that can be simply done if there is a low point where the water is collecting such as a pit,  is to place a sump pump with a float switch at the low point. A pump with a float switch costs a little over $100.00, and can always come in handy at a later date. You need the float switch so the pump turns on and off by itself so you can leave it unattended.

Another important and simple tip if your water service is interrupted is to connect to a neighbor's house. Sounds complicated and intrusive, but it is not. The first step is to turn off your main control valve so water does leak back out of the house through the leak. Secondly you will need a garden hose coupling or a washing machine hose, and a garden hose. Screw one end of the garden hose on to your garden hose cock connection, the other end of the garden hose onto a hose coupling or a washing machine hose, then screw the last end of the coupling or washing machine hose onto your neighbors hose cock connection. Open the two hose cock connections slowly with one of your sinks open and let all the air out of the pipe. When water is flowing smoothly out of the sink, shut it off. You now have water throughout the house, hot water heater and boiler too. This only takes a few minutes and, if anything, is much simpler than it sounds. In below freezing weather you will have to leave a house sink running slightly so the hose does not freeze up, running water generally will not freeze (like rivers in Winter time). This little tip saves homeowners a lot of aggravation and downtime without water service.

Many reputable water main companies in NYC will provide all of the above services free of charge, excluding providing a pump. Most firms charge for installing and providing a pump. I hope this article helps; I am always available on-line for questions and comments.

Many newer cars are provided with 100K miles between plug replacements.?

Do any of you go by that interval before replacing your plugs? Assuming that the engine is in good shape, does the plug deteriorate after long mileage? I understand that the gap has to be reset now and then but with the Platinum/Iridium plugs that may not be necessary. On the other hand the plugs may freeze up or corrode if left for long periods without "sounding" (unscrewed and re-screwed).
Against what does Delco warranty their Iridium plugs? What can go wrong with plugs other than that caused by damage during installation or fouled due to malfunctioning of the engine? Do they wear out eventually?

You are not supposed to set the gap on platinum or iridium plugs, this will damage the tip. Those plugs come pre gapped for the vehicle. Working in a Chevrolet dealership, I do several 100K tuneups on Impalas and such, which are now equipped with iridium plugs, and the plugs come out with no problem. Just make sure if the vehicle you are working on is equipped with aluminum cylinder heads, not to remove plugs from a hot motor, as the spark plug hole can warp as the engine cools, which can cause cross-threading. Also, plugs these days can be very expensive. AC Delco iridium plugs can be upwards of $10 each now.

Another thing to consider, no matter what anybody is telling you, i.e: recommended replacement for iridium plugs is 75K....consider this. AC Delco iridium plugs come with a 100K mile warranty. Straight from the AC Delco and General Motors Parts Catalog, recommended replacement is at 100K miles.
