My good old 2000 Saturn SL1 needed its transmission fluid and filter replaced. I have seen this done, I know how to do it, and you don't even need to get completely underneath the car. If you can reach the drain plug screw and get the air cleaner box out you can do this and save yourself for forty dollars.

But, I had difficulty getting the old filter off, enough so that I tugged on some of the wiring (not good), and when I filled the reservoir inside the transmission with the new transmission fluid some of it splashed onto the number 4 spark plug wire (shouldn't be that big a deal, but...).

When I drove the car the "service engine soon" light came on. I had bought a cheapie service code reader at "Car Area" (don't buy things like this there near Christmas time, they jack the prices up). The code was P0340, camshaft position indicator error. A look at the wires connecting things that might be a camshaft position indicator revealed no damage (hmm). So, it was time to Google "Saturn service code P0340".

Guess what! My Saturn has no camshaft position indicator! The purpose of this indicator is so the computer can tell whether the number one or number four cylinder has ignited a fuel charge. This engine fires both cylinders at the same time that eliminates the need for several moving parts (a good thing).

The computer has the ability to tell whether the cylinder that it monitors has fuel because it takes more electrical charge for the spark plug to fire then. And the cylinder that it monitors is (drum roll) cylinder number four, the one that got the fluid on its spark plug wire. This is where the story ends, my good old Saturn is at least as old but not quite so good. The service soon indicator shines on, oh well.

How to Change a Spark Plug?

You are about to kick start your bike or switch on ignition of your car. It makes a little sound and then stops. Search for the reason and you will find that the spark plug has stopped working and needs to be replaced. Here is what you should do in a situation like this.

Locate the spark plug. You can trace it by looking at the large black or colored wire that leads to the cylinder head.

Clean the plug before you remove it. There may be dirt on it which may fall into the cylinder when you pull it out. You must ensure that no dirt goes into the hole where the plug is located.

Fix the spark plug socket and ratchet handle over the plug and turn it anti-clockwise to loosen it. It may be a little difficult in the beginning, but should come out easily thereafter.

Look carefully at the electrode end of the plug. Some carbon may have accumulated over it. There may also be some dirt in the gap. This could mean that the plug needs replacement.

Make sure that the replacement plug is the same size as your existing plug. Look carefully at the threaded part. It should have the same length and the threads too should match with those of the old plug. If you are a layman and are unsure, you should take the old plug with you to the store and ask the person at the counter to check and match both the plugs.

Now that you have brought the plug, insert it into the cylinder head by hand at first. Make sure that the plug’s thread fits and lines up smoothly into the hole. If you cannot get the plug down by using your hands, it means that there is a problem with the alignment. You should try to insert it again till the threads are lined up.

Once the plug is set, it is time to tighten it up using the socket and ratchet.

Spark plug blew out of cylinder head. Thoughts?

I drive a 1981 Chevy LUV pickup, and on my way to work this afternoon one of the spark plugs blew out of the cylinder head. Now, the engine sounds horrible (like a machine gun), but the car still runs alright. First off, can I limp it to a mechanic so they can fix it, and finally what would a repair like that cost?

Yes, it will be okay to drive it. Shouldn't cost over $200.
